Marquess of Hamilton was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland . The title has been suspended since 1651.

Award

The title was created on April 17, 1599 for John Hamilton , the third son of the 2nd Earl of Arran . Along with the dignity of marquess, he was awarded the subordinate titles Lord Aven and Innerdale and Earl of Arran .

His son, the 2nd Marquess , inherited the titles of 4th Earl of Arran (1503) and 5th Lord Hamilton (1445) from his uncle and became Lord Aberbrothwick on May 5, 1608 and on June 16, 1619 in the Peerage of England also elevated to Earl of Cambridge and Baron Innerdale . His son, the 3rd Marquess , was also elevated to Duke of Hamilton in 1643 . On the death of his brother, the 2nd Duke , the Marquessate Hamilton and the other titles from 1599, 1608 and 1619, the Earldom Arran and the Lordship Hamilton have been suspended since then, and the Dukedom Hamilton fell to his niece Anne Hamilton .
