William Hamilton, 2nd Duke of Hamilton (* 1616 , † 12. September 1651 ) was a Scottish nobleman who during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms and both Royalists Presbyterians supported.

Life

William was the second son of James Hamilton, 2nd Marquess of Hamilton and his wife Anne Cunningham. He was made Earl of Lanark in 1639 and became Secretary of State in Scotland the next year . Accused of "consent" ( concurrence ) to his brother, the Duke of Hamilton , and arrested in 1643 on the orders of King Charles I , he was able to escape and temporarily reconciled with the Presbyterian party.

After taking part in the Battle of Kilsyth on the side of the Covenanter , he visited Charles I in Newcastle in 1646 on behalf of the Scottish committee of estates and tried in vain to persuade the king to establish Presbyterianism in England. On September 26, 1647, he signed the contract with Charles I for the Scots at Carisbrooke Castle , known as " engagement " , and helped organize the Second English Civil War.

In 1648 he fled to the Netherlands . In the following year he inherited the Dukedom of Hamilton due to the execution of his brother, which made him an important figure among the royalists in exile. Hamilton returned to Scotland in 1650 with King Charles II . He let an understanding with the Marquess of Argyll fail by sticking to his claims so as not to harm the king's plan.

He withdrew from everyday political life until the Scots invaded England in the third civil war, in which, as a colonel, led a unit of troops with his subordinates. He died of the wounds he sustained at the Battle of Worcester .

William was married to Elizabeth, daughter of James Maxwell, 1st Earl of Dirletoun . None of the five children in this marriage reached adulthood. The Dukedom of Hamilton was given to the eldest surviving daughter of the 1st Dukes, Anne , who rose to become the 3rd Duchess of Hamilton in her own right.
