John Hamilton, 1st Marquess of Hamilton

John Hamilton, 1st Marquess of Hamilton (around 1535 - April 6, 1604 ) was a Scottish nobleman .

John Hamilton was a son of James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran , and his wife Margaret Douglas. After his father's death, he ruled in place of his mentally ill brother James .

He was a follower of Queen Mary of Scots and participated in her liberation from Loch Leven Castle in 1568 . In 1579 he fled to France, but was reconciled with King James VI in 1585 .

He fought in the siege of Stirling Castle on November 3, 1585, as a result of which the expropriation of titles and property against his family was lifted on December 10, 1585. On the same day he was admitted to the Scottish Privy Council . In 1588 he led the negotiations on the marriage of King James VI. with the Danish Princess Anna in Copenhagen . From 1589 he held the post of Lieutenant of the South of Scotland and was finally elevated to Marquess of Hamilton on April 17, 1599 .

In the winter of 1577/78 he had married Margaret Lyon, daughter of John Lyon, 7th Lord Glamis . He had the following children with her:
