Coat of arms of James Douglas, 9th Earl of Douglas

Earl of Douglas was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

Award and history of the title

The title was bestowed on January 26, 1358 to Sir William Douglas . From the right of his wife Margaret he was also Earl of Mar from 1357 . Since his son, the 2nd Earl, had no legitimate descendants, his second uncle Archibald Douglas followed this as 3rd Earl Douglas and his sister Isabel Douglas as Countess of Mar. His son became Duke on April 19, 1424 in France Elevated by Touraine to Pair de France . On the death of his grandson, the 6th Earl Douglas , in 1440, his French titles lapsed and the earl title fell to his great-uncle James Douglas , who had already been raised to Earl of Avondale in 1437 . His younger son, 9th Earl Douglas , was stripped of all his titles for high treason in 1455 after an unsuccessful rebellion.
