Isabel Douglas, 11th Countess of Mar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Isabel Douglas, 11th Countess of Mar (also Isabella , * around 1360 , † between May and October 1408 ), was a Scottish noblewoman .

Life

Her father was William Douglas of Douglas , her mother was Margaret, Countess of Mar 10th .

The circumstances under which she took over the title from her mother and was officially awarded it are confusing:
It was first mentioned in Sir Thomas Erskine's formal protest on March 12, 1391 against the award of the title. Her interrogation at this protest had already taken place and she was referred to as Isabel of Mar, wife of Sir Malcolm Drummond . On October 19, 1393 her husband became the Lord of Mar appointed; their own official deed of appointment from Robert III. dated November 22, 1393. In this document, however, she was forbidden from the royal side (with a view to possible claims of the Erskine family) to sell, cede or give up parts of the Earldom.
When her illegitimate half-brother George took over the inheritance of her father and her brother (the two Earls of Douglas) as 1st Earl of Angus in 1397, she was reappointed Countess of Mar in one of the many necessary documents , probably for her title and secure property.

Isabella, Lady of Mar and Garioch , signed several documents, dated April 19, 1400, November 8, 1402, and March 18, 1403, with which she and her husband assigned lands to their half-brother or the Bishop of Aberdeen, with Isabella, Lady of Mar and Garioch , although that Seal Countess of Mar used by her showed.

After the death of her first husband Sir Malcolm Drummond of Strathurd towards the end of 1402, she met Alexander , the eldest son of Alexander Stuart, 1st Earl of Buchan , called "Wolf of Badenoch". Several marriage vows followed in 1404, sometimes under spectacular circumstances, but were made by the crown from the above. Reasons not approved. Only a marriage contract dated December 9, 1404, in which the succession was not explicitly specified, was approved by Robert III. The marriage entered into after this date, but before January 2, 1405, was subsequently approved with a royal seal on the marriage contract on January 21, 1405, after which Alexander iure uxoris carried the title of Earl of Mar and Garioch .

Isabel died childless in the summer of 1408 while her husband was on a campaign in Flanders.

Remarks

  1. The age of Isabel at that time almost excluded children, so that in this way the claims of the Erskine family were preserved.
  2. At this time, the appointment of Alexander carried the Lord of Mar .
