George Douglas, 1st Earl of Angus (* around 1378 ; † September 1402 ), was a Scottish nobleman . He is considered the founder of the "Red Line" of the Douglas family .

Life

George was an illegitimate son of William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas , from his association with Margaret , daughter of Thomas Stewart, 2nd Earl of Angus ( bestowal title of 1329). After his mother had renounced her title in his favor on April 9, 1389, he was confirmed in possession of Robert II on the following day and appointed Earl of Angus in a new award .

In his marriage, on May 24, 1397, he married Mary, daughter of the Scottish King Robert III. With her he had two children; his son and heir William (later 2nd Earl); and a daughter Mary, who married Alexander Forbes, 1st Lord Forbes , around 1423 . Robert III, too. operated him after the marriage with an official document in title and possession.

Little is known of George from the following years until his untimely death. He followed his relative Archibald Douglas, 4th Earl of Douglas , who commanded the Scottish invading army in the war against England from 1401, was captured by the British at the Battle of Homildon Hill on September 14, 1402 and died in England that same year Pest.
