Margaret Stewart, Countess of Angus ( 1355 - March 23, 1418 ), was a Scottish noblewoman .

Life

Her father was Thomas Stewart, 2nd Earl of Angus ; her mother was Margarete, daughter of William St Clair (Sinclair) of Rosslyn (or Roslin). She was about seven years old when her father died in 1361. When her brother Thomas Stewart, 3rd Earl of Angus died childless , he inherited his title as Countess of Angus .

About their lives, little is known: In her first marriage she was with Thomas, the ninth Earl of Mar married. The date of the marriage is not known, the marriage remained childless and she was already a widow at about 19 years of age when her brother-in-law William Douglas described himself as Earl of Douglas and Mar on June 21, 1374 .

After the death of her husband, Margaret lived on the Angus estate with her sister Elisabeth. During this time she referred to herself as the Countess of Mar . In February 1379 her sister ceded all rights to her sister with the approval of Robert II as co-heir; then Margaret used the title Countess of Angus and Mar .

From the end of 1379 Margaret lived in Tantallon Castle , a castle owned by her brother-in-law William. It cannot be proven whether she was married to him. Even so, she had two children with him; a son George , who is considered to be the founder of the so-called "Red Line" of the Douglas family. In his favor she renounced the title of Earl of Angus in 1389 ; in a new award from King Robert III. George was named 1st Earl of Angus. A daughter from this relationship, Margaret, was given land in 1404 by her half-sister Isabel .
