The Focke-Achgelis Fa 269 was a project of the German manufacturer Focke-Achgelis from the 1940s to develop a hunting - changing aircraft . Only a dummy was created.
history
The development work on the Fa 269 began in 1941 at the instigation of the Reich Aviation Ministry (RLM), which requested the design for a single-seat object protection fighter. This should combine the VTOL properties of a helicopter with the speed and economy of a conventional fixed-wing aircraft . The work was subject to a high level of confidentiality. Due to the complexity of this innovative concept at the time, the development team estimated that it would take at least five years to complete the project.
The Fa 269 was to have a BMW 801 star engine installed behind the cockpit in the fuselage . The drive of three-bladed rotors was provided via long-distance shafts running in the wing leading edges and synchronized gears. The rotor plane should be tiltable by 80 degrees with the help of shaft extensions . The intended construction required a large angle of attack when stationary in order to achieve sufficient ground clearance for the rotors. This should be ensured with very long chassis struts.
For a vertical take-off, the rotors were lowered down until they were aligned parallel to the ground. During the transition that followed , the rotors swiveled backwards and then acted as a pusher propeller .
Extensive wind tunnel investigations were carried out together with development work on the gearboxes, shafts and the tilting mechanism. A full-scale wooden dummy, created in 1943, fell victim to a bomb attack and work was finally stopped in 1944 when it became clear that an airworthy prototype could not be expected until 1947 at the earliest.
