The Eparchy Miskolc ( Latin Eparchia Miskolcensis ) is a Greek Catholic diocese in Hungary unified with the Roman Catholic Church .

history

As the Apostolic Exarchate Miskolc ( Latin Apostolicus Exarchatus Miskolcensis ), the eparchy was established on June 4, 1924 for the Ruthenian Greek Catholics in Hungary. It is located in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County in the northeast of the country. The Ruthenians , who originally held their liturgy in Church Slavonic , soon switched to Hungarian, so that from 1940 the administration was with the Bishop of Hajdúdorog .

On May 2, 2008, the Hungarian Greek Catholic Church received a joint head again with the appointment of Bishop Fülöp Kocsis as Bishop of Hajdúdorog and Apostolic Administrator of Miskolc. Pope Benedict XVI appointed his own exarch on March 5, 2011, Atanáz Orosz .

With the reorganization of the Greek Catholic Church in Hungary, Pope Francis elevated the Apostolic Exarchate of Miskolc to the rank of an eparchy on March 20, 2015 and, as a suffragan diocese , made it subordinate to the Hajdúdorog Archeparchy , which was elevated to the status of a metropolitan area .
