Earl of Avondale
Earl of Avondale (also Avandale ) was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland . It is named after the valley of the Scottish River Avon.
Awarding and other titles
The title was bestowed on James Douglas in 1437 . He was the younger son of Archibald Douglas, 3rd Earl of Douglas and inherited the title 7th Earl of Douglas from his great-nephew in 1440 . His second son, the 9th Earl, was stripped of all titles in 1455 for high treason, which also made the Avondale Earldom extinct.
