James Douglas, 2nd Earl of Douglas (* around 1358 , † August 14, 1388 in Otterburn ) was a Scottish nobleman from the Douglas dynasty .

James was the elder son of William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas and his first wife, Margaret, Countess of Mar 10th . When his father died in 1384, he inherited him as 2nd Earl of Douglas . From the right of his mother, he also appeared as Earl of Mar on.

Since 1371 he was married to Isabella Stewart, daughter of the Scottish King Robert II .

James fell as a military leader at the Battle of Otterburn on August 14, 1388 and was buried in Melrose , Roxburgshire.

Since he had only two illegitimate sons: William Douglas, 1st feudal Lord of Drumlanrig (progenitor of the Earls, Marquesses and Dukes of Queensberry ) and Archibald Douglas (progenitor of the Douglas of Cavers family), he was followed by his father's cousin Archibald Douglas as 3rd Earl of Douglas. Since his mother survived him, her title fell to his sister Isabel Douglas as the 11th Countess of Mar in 1393.
