Melrose is a town of 2307 inhabitants in the Scottish Borders on the banks of the River Tweed . The name "Melrose" comes from the Celtic mail-rhos , which means something like "cultivated, cultivated meadow". Melrose is in County Roxburghshire .

history

Originally, Melrose was called Fordel . It was not until 1136 that Cistercian monks began to rebuild Melrose Abbey near the settlement , which was destroyed in 839 and originally located a few miles to the east, that the village gradually took on the name of the monastery. In the 14th century and in the 1540s, the city, like the abbey, suffered repeatedly from invading English troops. When the abbey finally had to be closed for good in 1560 due to the Reformation , the town of Melrose was already an established center for wool and linen production.

Attractions

In Melrose are the ruins of Melrose Abbey , where the heart of the Scottish King Robert I , known as Robert the Bruce , is said to be buried. In the vicinity of Melrose are the Roman fort Trimontium and Dryburgh Abbey . The nearby Eildon Hills were an important base for the Votadini tribe in the Iron Age , as evidenced by the remains of a huge hill fortress on the top of the easternmost hill. King Arthur is said to be buried in the hills . A few miles west of town is Abbotsford House , home of the writer Sir Walter Scott .

The ba game , a returning to pagan tradition game that mainly Orkney is known, is played here the year.
