Fünfhaus is the northern and eastern part of Vienna's 15th district Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus and one of the 89 Viennese cadastral communities .

The cadastral community extends over an area of ​​164.83 hectares . Fünfhaus is bounded by Gablenzgasse in the north and by the Gürtel in the east, corresponding to the borderline of the 15th district . Within the municipality, the border to the Rudolfsheim district runs north of the Westbahnhof along the western section of Hütteldorfer Straße and along Pouthongasse. To the south of the Westbahnhof, the border between the cadastral community and the Rudolfsheim district is essentially formed by Grenzgasse and Geibelgasse, while that to the Sechshaus district is formed by Sechshauser Straße.

From old documents we learn that there were fields and vineyards mainly on the Schmelz . The people who cultivated these fields were probably completely without rights and lived in the most primitive conditions. These corridors were almost exclusively owned by the church, as can be seen in the land register of St. Michael in Vienna .

After almost all places in the area of ​​today's 15th district were destroyed during the second Turkish siege in 1683, five villages were created, partly through the reconstruction of the old settlements: Rustendorf , Braunhirschen , Reindorf , Sechshaus and Fünfhaus.

At the beginning (until around 1708) there was a small group of five winegrowers 'and gardeners' houses in the area of ​​today's Clementinengasse, which gave the district part the name that is still valid today - similar to Dreihaus and Sechshaus.

The huge area of ​​the Schmelz, north of the Hütteldorfer Straße, to Ottakring and Neulerchenfeld , served as a parade ground from 1847 and was not settled until the beginning of the 20th century. In 1911, the military released ten hectares, or one fifth of the Schmelz, for building. Construction of the first house - Hütteldorfer Straße 74 - began in October 1911. In 1912 the construction of the houses began, which today form the so-called Nibelungenviertel . At the end of the 19th century, the construction of parts of the Schmelz north of the new western railway line for residential construction had already begun; Neu-Fünfhaus was built .

At the beginning of the 18th century, a rifle factory was opened in what is now the Gasgasse district office. In addition, Vienna’s second gasworks, the Fünfhaus gasworks , and the “Fünfhauser Brauhaus” with its spacious guest gardens were built. On January 1, 1892, Fünfhaus was constituted in the course of the incorporation of the Viennese suburbs into the 15th district and was able to retain its district identity until 1938. That year, Fünfhaus was merged with Rudolfsheim.

After the incorporation, the eastern border of Fünfhaus ran from Burggasse to Mariahilfer Straße one block east of the belt, thus through Wimbergergasse, Kenyongasse and the area of ​​the Sophienspital. On December 28, 1904, state law stipulated that this district border was relocated to the Gürtelstrasse. The governor's announcement on June 7th, 1905 specified that the new border with the 7th district would run along the “western border of the Stadtbahn” and would apply from July 1st, 1905.

Description of the coat of arms : The coat of arms of Fünfhaus shows a scene of the Archangel Michael , in which he kills a dragon. Michael wears a silver robe with a gold cross on his chest. He wears a golden helmet with ostrich feathers on his head. In his right hand he holds a golden cross lance with which he kills a fire-breathing dragon lying on a brown background. The coat of arms comes from the fact that the Barnabite College of St. Michael in Vienna was the most important landlord of the Fünfhaus and Sechshaus settlements.

It should be noted that the coat of arms of Fünfhaus, similar to that of Rudolfsheim, is not completely identical to the half of the coat of arms in the Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus coat of arms, especially in terms of color and detail.
