history

Fünfhaus gasworks around 1890

Society for lighting with kk exclusively privately improved gas

On November 4, 1836 a native of Fuenfhaus tinsmith and lamp producer Charles Demuth of Vergnügungsetablissements († 1883), 1837 Owner Tivoli , a privilege to improvement of illuminating gas awarded that in the wake of the founded by Theodor Friedrich Hene in 1839 Company for lighting with kk exclusively privately improved gas was assigned. In 1840 this company built the Fünfhaus gasworks and in October of the same year supplied the street lighting on Schönbrunner Hofstrasse between the Wiener Linie and the beginning of the suburb of Fünfhaus .

Imperial Continental Gas Association

On October 1, 1842 (in the course of taking over the state privilege of the society for lighting ) the five house gas works by the President of the English Imperial Continental Gas Association ICGA, M (atthias) Wolverley Attwood (1808-1865), as their first Gas works in Vienna acquired and continued. In 1843 the small gas company was enlarged by the new owners .

Due to the expiry of the lighting contract between the ICGA and the City of Vienna on December 31, 1911 and the subsequent takeover of the gas supply for the entire urban area by the municipal gasworks Simmering and Leopoldau , the Fünfhaus gasworks was closed and later canceled.

technology

The gasworks, originally built by Theodor Friedrich Hené, used resin oil as the raw material for gas production, of which Hené was qualitatively convinced in his book " The gas lighting in Vienna " published in 1833 as secretary of the Austrian Society for Lighting with Gas (Gaswerk Roßau) (allegedly possessed this gas has a higher luminosity and does not blacken silver.).

The gasworks newly built by the Imperial Continental Gas Association was designed for degassing hard coal and by 1903 had 23 retort furnaces with a total of 169 retorts and three gas containers.

memory

The traffic areas Gasgasse , Kohlenhofgasse and Lichtgasse in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus , located between Mariahilfer Straße and Westbahnhof , are reminiscent of the former gasworks .
