Remscheid Hauptbahnhof is a train station in the Bergisch city of Remscheid . It is located on Willy-Brandt-Platz near the Remscheid city center and belongs to station category 5. It is one of the few main stations in major German cities that are not connected to a long-distance network and, together with the Gevelsberg main station and the Loerrach main station, one of the few "main station" “Called access points in Germany, which are only accessed by S-Bahn trains .

The Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft opened the first section of its Rittershausen – Opladen line from Oberbarmen (then called Rittershausen) to Lennep , together with a branch line to Remscheid, which gave the city its first rail connection. The Remscheid train station (later the main train station), like the outbuildings, was built in half-timbered construction.
On September 1, 1883, the branch line was extended beyond the Remscheid train station as the Lennep – Hasten line to Hasten and in 1891 a second track was added from Lennep to Remscheid . Five years later there was also a connection to Bliedinghausen , which, however, only ever served freight traffic.
In connection with the construction of the line to Bliedinghausen, the platform system was also modified. The passenger trains from Hasten were given their own head platform west of the reception building. The loading tracks previously located there were newly built east of Bismarckstrasse as what would later become the Remscheid Ost pre-station, and in autumn 1900 they were connected to the station with four tracks via an overpass on Bismarckstrasse.
In the course of the construction of the connection route via Güldenwerth to Solingen over the Müngstener Bridge , the locomotive station had to be abandoned at the beginning of 1896 for reasons of space and the locomotive maintenance had to be transferred to the depot in the neighboring town of Lennep .
In 1897 the gap between Solingen Süd and Remscheid was finally closed, and in 1907 this line was expanded to two tracks. Thus, the Remscheid train station had rail connections in four directions (as well as via Lennep in the direction of Opladen). On August 10, 1911, a representative stone new building of the reception building was inaugurated, which replaced the existing building, which is popularly known as the cigar box because of its limited space . The Hasten route continued to end on a stump track on the west side of the building, the previous two tracks were supplemented by a central platform and a house platform with an intervening pedestrian bridge and a tunnel to the railway post office, the new building was achieved by rebuilding part of the platform hall of the Elberfeld station. Döppersberg added and in 1911 goods handling was relocated to the opposite southern side of the track field (loading street).
Until 1911 the area around the train station was called An der Quatsche , in the Third Reich the area in front of the train station was called Adolf-Müller-Straße.
In 1914 the station was renamed Remscheid Hauptbahnhof to emphasize its importance as the most important station in the city of Remscheid. Passenger traffic to Hasten was stopped as early as 1922; freight traffic was still quite extensive due to the general cargo traffic with the stations in Hasten and Vieringhausen as well as wagonload traffic to ten sidings from industrial companies on the line. Freight traffic to Hasten was stopped in 1986, to Vieringhausen only in 1988, the official line closure took place on December 31, 1990. Between March 1993 and September 1996 the line was dismantled. In 2006, the railway line was converted into a hiking trail called Trasse des Werkzeugs .
The importance of the Remscheid main station always lagged behind that of the station in the neighboring city at that time (until 1929) and today's district of Lennep, but from the opening until the incorporation of Lennep it was the most important station in the area of the city of Remscheid.
On April 28, 1974, the central signal box Rf was put into operation as a track plan push button signal box of the type Sp Dr L 60 at the southwest end of the railway area next to the level crossing at Papenberger Straße . It was responsible for the operation of the main train station itself, the train station in Güldenwerth , the Solingen-Schaberg stop , the routes to Bliedinghausen and Hasten as well as various restricted level crossings in Remscheid.

The built after the war destruction in simplified form on the remaining foundation walls again and again inaugurated on August 14, 1956 reception building was for many years the subject of intense discussions. Since the railway only carried out the most necessary work, its condition continued to deteriorate. As part of the “ Regionale 2006 ”, it was decided to completely rebuild the station as part of the renovation of the stations and the railway line. The old station building was demolished between December 2006 and February 2007. In order to replace the old pedestrian overpass, the THW built a temporary bridge in November 2006 , which was in operation until the new building was completed. The planned showcase of the economy was not built due to a lack of investors, instead green and leisure areas were created.
In April 2009 the rebuilt Remscheid Central Station was opened.
Depot
In 2013, a depot of the private railway company Abellio Rail NRW , which has been operating the S 7 line since December 15, 2013, was built on the site of the main station, where the freight tracks previously ran . This includes u. a. a filling station for the diesel railcars and a disposal station for the chemical toilets .

Since the setting movement of persons as Hasten in 1922 later than was the Müngstener known regional train RB 47 from Solingen Hauptbahnhof to Wuppertal Hauptbahnhof the only link for passenger services, which starts up the Remscheid Central Station. The connection was integrated into the network of the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr on December 15, 2013 and has been running under the line number S 7 since then. Since the closure of the remaining lines from Lennep, there are no more rail connections in the rest of the Remscheid city area either. only the route from the main train station to Bliedinghausen is still used for freight traffic.
During the week, the S 7 runs in the load direction (two trains each) between Solingen main station with a stop in Hilden and Düsseldorf-Eller Mitte and the main station of the state capital .
Two platform tracks are available for passenger transport, which are used by the S-Bahn trains, and there are also several freight tracks. The bus station is on the forecourt of the train station. Several lines of the Remscheider Stadtwerke and other transport companies operate here in urban and regional traffic.
