The Solingen-Schaberg stop is a stop in the Bergisch city of Solingen near the Müngstener bridge .

location

The Müngstener Bridge a few hundred meters away

The Solingen-Schaberg stop is secluded on the edge of a forest area - far away from all main and through roads and without any connection to bus traffic - in the extreme east of Solingen near the eponymous Hofschaft Schaberg. It is located on a hill above the Wupper , which is spanned a few hundred meters further east by the 107-meter-high Müngstener Bridge, the highest railway bridge in Germany.

The stop is connected to the Müngsten Bridge Park , among others, by numerous hiking trails . There is also a connection to the hiking trail that surrounds Solingen, the Klingenpfad , from Schaberg.

history

The back of the station building

It was first opened in 1897 when the nearby Müngstener Bridge was being built. After this was completed, it served primarily tourist purposes. In 1906 the station building was completely destroyed by a tornado that swept over the Müngsten area ( cyclone in the Bergisches Land in 1906 ). Two years later, the station building was rebuilt in a new form under the influence of Art Nouveau . Since then, there is also a train station restaurant in the premises.

The station building has been a registered monument since March 2, 1998 .

On September 11, 1999, the station was the scene of a train accident in which a construction train loaded with gravel collided with another construction train standing in the station at around 60  km / h . Five people suffered minor injuries and the property damage amounted to at least three million Deutschmarks .

During the renovation of the Müngsten Bridge between 2011 and 2015 and the associated line closure, the Schaberg stop remained unused for a long time. DB Station & Service used this period as an opportunity to raise the two platforms to 76 cm above the top of the rails and to integrate a guidance system for the blind . In addition, the platform on the track in the direction of Remscheid was moved around 65 meters in the direction of Müngstener Brücke. Nevertheless, this platform can still only be reached via an underpass with stairs.
