Location of Strümp in Meerbusch

Strümp is one of eight districts of the city of Meerbusch . Strümp is located in the center of the city, and about 11% of the total population of Meerbusch (5989 of 55,354 inhabitants, as of December 31, 2010) live here.

The name of the place is probably derived from the Strempe , a stream that flows through the place and which has its headwaters nearby.

geography

Strümp is located in the center of the area of the city of Meerbusch, surrounded by the other districts:

Pesch Castle , Ossum-Bösinghoven Lank-Latum Kidney
Osterath Neighboring communities Ilverich , Langst-Kierst
Bovert House sea Buderich

The place itself is roughly divided into the center on Xantener Straße and the settlements of Schürkesfeld (towards Bösinghoven) and Rottfeld / Strümper Busch (towards Osterath), as well as a few individual farms.

In the north and east, the highways 44 and 57 cut through the Strümper district (see section Traffic below).

The entire local area lies on a river terrace of the Lower Rhine ( Lower Rhine Bay ) and is very flat. The so-called "Strümper Berg" is hardly noticeably higher than the surrounding area.

To the east and south-east of Strümp, extensive fields and meadows extend to the Rhine. The agricultural paths are often paved and invite you to walk, cycle or inline skate. The Ilvericher Altrheinschlinge nature reserve is a retreat for rare animal and plant species and serves as a retention area for possible Rhine floods.

Around Strümp there are also some larger forest areas (often moist swamp forests ): the Strümper Busch in the south, the Lanker Bruch in the northeast and the Herrenbusch in the northwest (to Pesch Castle).

history

Parts of an early medieval settlement were excavated in 1990/91. About 20 pit houses, several storage buildings and three wells were found on an area of around 180 × 70 m, while the actual residential buildings were no longer preserved. The finds begin at the end of the 5th century and last until at least the early 8th century. In the year 1090/1120 Strümp is mentioned for the first time as Streimpeche in the written sources. From 1392 to 1794 Strümp was part of the Electoral Cologne Office of Linn .

Until the middle of the 20th century, Strümp was a scattered village consisting essentially of individual courtyards without a village center. Only in the area of Xantener Straße - where the core is still today - can a densification of the buildings from the 19th century be discerned. Around 1850 Strümp had about 500 inhabitants.

For a long time, the spiritual center of the village was the chapel of St. Amandus and St. Vedastus , which dates back to the 12th century. Although Strümper belonged to Lank in the church, the proud Strümper tried very hard to achieve or maintain their independence as a parish. The chapel was rebuilt in 1888 by the builder Vincenz Statz because of dilapidation and lightning , but was then badly damaged in World War II. From 1961 it was therefore replaced by a new, significantly larger church, which is consecrated to St. Francis (see below section Buildings ).

By 1953 the population had risen to around 900. Since the 1960s, Strümp has become a typical place to live . A large number of residential areas have been designated, but the majority of residents commute to work in Düsseldorf, Krefeld or the rest of the Rhine-Ruhr area. Gradually, some retail and small businesses also emerged (see section Economy and Infrastructure below).

Strümp was incorporated into Meerbusch on January 1, 1970. In 1974 the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia decided to dissolve the city of Meerbusch and to divide Strümp between the cities of Düsseldorf (main part) and Krefeld. However, the city of Meerbusch obtained the suspension of the dissolution decision at the constitutional court in Münster . The state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia then confirmed the existence of the city of Meerbusch in 1976.

The partnership with the French community of Fouesnant , which the city of Meerbusch has continued to this day , was concluded by Strümp in 1968.

coat of arms

Stein with Strümper coat of arms

The Strümper coat of arms, designed in 1947, was never registered with the German Central Office for Heraldry and - since Strümp is not an independent municipality - it is still not official. Nevertheless, it is preserved and shown as theirs by many stockings, especially by the Heimat- und Schützenverein , u. a. at the top of a maypole that stands all year round on the Strümper market square.

Blazon : The coat of arms is half-split and divided, shows in the first field a green oak on a blue background (for the wealth of forests in the region) with a star and moon (for the early Celtic settlers), in the second field a red horse and a red cattle ( for the local cattle breeding) on a green ground with a sun. The base of the shield is divided diagonally white and red by a blue wavy band (for the aforementioned Strempe stream ) and shows an ear of corn in front (for the fertile fields around Strümp), behind a wheel and a hammer (for the Strümper handicraft).

Culture and sights

Buildings

Catholic Church of St. Franziskus
On the western outskirts ( 51 ° 16 ′ 57.8 ″  N , 6 ° 38 ′ 54.6 ″  E ), near the
L 154 to Osterath, there is the Catholic Church, whose patron is St. Francis of Assisi is. As explained in the history section above , this replaced the much smaller chapel of St. Amandus and St. Vedastus . The church was designed in a modern style by the architects Schöningh & Nagel and built from 1961. The Strümper sculptor Karl Franke and his son Michael created many objects inside. The Way of the Cross is by Egino Weinert , the windows by Ernst Oberhoff , professor at the Wuppertal Art Academy and his students.

Evangelical Reconciliation Church
Also on the western edge of the village is the Evangelical Reconciliation Church , built in 1985/86 , a branch of the Evangelical parish of Lank.

Pesch Castle
Northwest of Strümp, on the L 386 halfway in the direction of Bösinghoven, lies Pesch Castle in a spacious park , a former hunting lodge of the Dukes of Arenberg . The palace and park are privately owned and cannot be visited.

Sports

Various sports clubs are based in Strümp:

  • The game and sports club SSV Strümp 1964 e. V. maintains a sports area on the western edge of the village and offers activities in the disciplines of football, table tennis, gymnastics, gymnastics, badminton and Nordic walking.
  • The tennis club TC Strümp e. V. from 1969 maintains a sports area with seven tennis courts on the western edge of the town .
  • The Heimat- und Schützenverein Strümp organizes the Heimat- und Schützenfest, the royal bird shooting and the cup shooting every three years.

Regular events

Every three years (most recently in 2013) the Heimat- und Schützenverein Strümp 1865 e. V. organized a large folk and rifle festival.

Economy and Infrastructure

In Strümp there are mainly retail, small businesses, agriculture and horticulture. The Wendt company is noteworthy as a manufacturing company , an internationally active grinding technology company founded in 1920, which has its headquarters in Strümp and employs around 230 people here.

traffic

Strümp is conveniently located near the Meerbusch motorway junction , where motorways 44 (in east-west direction) and 57 (in north-south direction) intersect. Strümp is directly connected to the A 44 via junction 28 (Lank-Latum); to the A 57 indirectly via the Meerbusch junction or the Bovert junction .

Airport bridge on the A 44 north-east of Strümp

The expansion of the federal motorway 44 north of Strümp to the new airport bridge in 2005 posed a particular challenge, as the motorway had to be partly underground to preserve nature reserves (Altrheinschlinge Ilvericher Bruch) and the tunnels near the Rhine are well below the groundwater level.

Despite its proximity to Düsseldorf Airport , Strümp is only moderately affected by aircraft noise in normal winds, as the location is on the northern edge of the take-off and landing funnel.

Strümp is only connected to the public transport network of the Rheinbahn by bus. Several lines (830, 831, 839) run regularly south to Haus Meer , from where the so-called K-Bahn connects to Düsseldorf and Krefeld. Alternatively, you can take the bus to Osterath (line 832), Moers via Uerdingen (line 831) or Neuss (line 830), each with a Deutsche Bahn station .

education

Strümp offers four kindergartens as educational institutions (Städtischer Kindergarten Kunterbunt , Catholic Kindergarten St. Franziskus , Kindergarten Schatzinsel and the parents' initiative Kindergarten 71 eV ), as well as a primary school (Martinus School). The special needs school (Raphael School) disbanded on July 19, 2013, because too few students attended the school. The municipal Meerbusch-Gymnasium is located on site as a secondary school .

Rescue services

The Meerbusch volunteer fire brigade has stationed a fire engine with a modern fire station and four vehicles in Strümp .
