Ernst Oberhoff

Ernst Oberhoff (born July 24, 1906 in Großsporkert / Ronsdorf, today in Wuppertal ; † April 7, 1980 in Wuppertal) was a German painter, sculptor and graphic artist.

Ernst Oberhoff learned the painting trade from 1920 to 1923, but was interested in the fine arts and attended evening courses with Gustav Wiethüchter at the Kunstgewerbeschule Barmen during his training . 1929–1931 Oberhoff studied with Heinrich Campendonk at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . At the age of 26 he became a lecturer and taught painting at the Werkkunstschule Wuppertal for 18 years .

1950–1953 he moved to Düsseldorf , where he taught wall painting and painting techniques at the art academy. Then returned to his old sphere of activity in Wuppertal. In 1970 he was appointed professor. For fourteen years he was chairman of the “ Bergische Künstler-Genossenschaft ”. Several contemporary artists have studied with Ernst Oberhoff. Such as Wolf Vostell , Joseph Beuys and Friedrich Julius Scherff . He was also referred to as the “veteran of Wuppertal painting” and showed “his figurative-geometric version of the zeitgeist art of that time”.

His works include the paintings "Colorful Landscape" and "Klosteranlage auf Hügel", which achieved top prices at Christie's auctions in Amsterdam after his death. With the design of the relief on the entrance door of the Protestant town church in Lüttringhausen , he has set himself a permanent monument, as well as with the elaborate mosaic design of the stairwell in the police headquarters in Wuppertal .
