About this picture
Location of Ilverich in Meerbusch

Ilverich is a district of Meerbusch . The name developed from Elfriche, Elvreke, Elverick, Eilverich and Elverich to Ilverich.

history

The street village developed on the bank of an oxbow lake of the Rhine, the Ilverich Altrheinschlinge later named after the place . Foundations of a Roman mansion were found, although it is not clear whether it was a single house or whether settlement structures already existed. From 1392 to 1794 Ilverich belonged to the Electoral Cologne office of Linn . The dike , completed in 1890, protected Ilverich from the regular flooding caused by the Rhine floods.

With the school building, the only public building in town was built in 1827. Next to the school hall there was also a teacher's apartment, in 1859 a bell donated by the local bachelors was installed, which rang for lunch breaks and funerals. In 1962 a break hall was added at right angles to the main building. The school was closed in 1968 after all classes were relocated to Lank . The building was sold to Angela and Wolfgang Paul, who used it as a gallery under the name Galerie Ilverich until 1996 , in which Joseph Beuys , who was friends with the gallery owner, exhibited several times. Today the school building is used as a residential building.

On January 1, 1970, the place belonging to the Lank Office was incorporated into the city of Meerbusch, which was founded due to the municipal reform. In 1974 the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia decided to dissolve the city of Meerbusch and to incorporate Ilverich into the state capital Düsseldorf. However, the city of Meerbusch obtained the suspension of the dissolution decision at the constitutional court in Münster . The state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia then confirmed the existence of the city of Meerbusch in 1976.
