Location of Nierst in Meerbusch
St. Cyriakus in Nierst

Nierst is one of the smaller districts of Meerbusch . It is the northernmost of the three Rhine municipalities.

history

Nierst was first mentioned in a document in 1166. In this certificate Hildegundis von Meer confirmed to the Seisthof (today: Siegershof) in Nierst that it is exempt from taxes and has jurisdiction. At that time the Seisthof was subordinate to the Meer Monastery . In 1185 the Werthof was named in another document. From 1392 to 1794 Nierst belonged to the Electoral Cologne Office of Linn . Nierst was called free glory ; One of the consequences of this status was that wanted people could stay in Nierst for three days without being arrested. The high jurisdiction remained with Kurköln.

Until the regional reform in 1970, Nierst belonged as a municipality to the Lank office and thus to the Kempen-Krefeld district . With the reorganization, Nierst came to the newly founded city of Meerbusch on January 1, 1970.

In 1974 the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia decided to dissolve the city of Meerbusch and to incorporate Nierst into the city of Krefeld. However, the city of Meerbusch obtained the suspension of the dissolution decision at the constitutional court in Münster . The state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia then confirmed the existence of the city of Meerbusch in 1976.

Surname

The name Nierst goes back to the designation Niederseist . Seist was a term for larger river islands in Franconian times. The names of the neighboring villages Langst and Kierst go back to Langenseist and Kirchseist .

Culture

The old Seisthof and Werthof farms probably had chapels. The exact dates of a church building are unknown. The choice of the patron saint - St. Cyriakus - speaks for the establishment of the parish before the 9th century. Around 1460 the nave of the chapel that existed at the time was replaced by a new Gothic building. The entire chapel - with a still Romanesque tower - was demolished in 1896.

The current church of St. Cyriakus was consecrated in 1895.

regional customs

Carnival is of great importance in Nierst . The carnival association "Kött on Kleen", founded in 1905, holds meetings and balls in the marquee every year; but most important is the Rosenmontagszug who draws under large sympathy of the place all day through Nierst.
