The Amstetten train station is a railway junction in Lower Austria . A branch line of the Rudolfsbahn to Kleinreifling , which runs via Waidhofen an der Ybbs , ends in Amstetten ; the station is also on the Westbahn . The station is used by local and long-distance trains.

history

Amstetten heating house (2005)

The station was opened with the then Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Bahn on December 15, 1858. On June 1, 1860, the line was extended to Salzburg and on June 12, 1860, the line to Munich was opened. At that time the station was still in the Preinsbach municipality , which was incorporated into Amstetten in 1883 , so that the station was in the Amstetten municipality. On November 12, 1872, the Crown Prince Rudolf Railway and its branch line were also opened - Amstetten became a traffic junction. Because the two railways were independent companies, the Crown Prince Rudolf-Bahn had to lay its own track in Amstetten, as the Empress Elisabeth-Bahn did not allow them to use their tracks. After the Kronprinz Rudolf-Bahn was connected to the Kaiserin Elisabeth-Bahn, the station building and the tracks were expanded.

In 1892 plans for a railway line from Amstetten to Grein emerged . The Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha on Greinburg was ready to finance the construction of the bridge. But the route was rejected by Grein City Council.

Amstetten water tower (2011)

In 1908/09 an 18 meter high water tower with two water tanks was built, each with a capacity of 40,000 liters. In 1913 the platforms were roofed over.

During the Second World War, the station and the track system were badly damaged. The provisional reconstruction began in April 1945, a track was rebuilt and the tickets were sold in the Hotel Hofmann. In June 1951 the section of the Westbahn Linz – Amstetten was electrified, in December 1952 the whole Westbahn and in 1967/68 also the Rudolfsbahn.

The station was rebuilt for the first time in 1972/73, but no new construction took place. In 1976 the bus station was built west of the train station. In 1987 the first underpass was also opened. With the NAT, the new Austro Takt of the ÖBB, the train station became an InterCity train station on June 2, 1991 .

Today's train station was modernized as part of the corporate design initiative launched by the railway in the 1990s; in 1989 the architects Zechner & Zechner won the competition to build the Amstetten train station. With the renovation in 1992, the station was given a new roof, for which it received an international architectural award in 1996, the Brunel Award . In 2008 a large park & ride facility was opened.
