The Baal train station in the district of Baal was the most important train station in Hückelhovener urban area and was built in 1852 as a through station on the Aachen – Mönchengladbach railway line . However, it has lost its importance as a junction for passenger traffic with the construction of a tower station further to the west due to the closure of the Jülich – Dalheim railway on this section. The stop has been signposted with Hückelhoven-Baal since 2002, but it is still called Baal in the Deutsche Bahn operating point directory .

In 1852 the Aachen – Mönchengladbach railway was opened by the Aachen-Neuss-Düsseldorfer Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft , and Baal received a passenger and freight station at kilometer 41.6 . This station was equipped with a reception building , a ramp for goods handling, a small turntable and a small transfer table , which were used for goods traffic.

The street name Am alten Bahnhof and the retaining wall of the old foundation still reminds of the original location . Today, at the site of the old station, there is still the Baal freight station, the associated dispatcher interlocking, which has not been used since the end of 2007, and the branch to the connecting curve to Ratheim .

In 1911 the passenger station was relocated to the west. The occasion was the newly opened Jülich – Dalheim railway line . In order to be able to serve the two railway lines, a tower station was built, which consisted of an upper stop on the Aachen – Mönchengladbach railway line and a lower stop on the line between Jülich and Dalheim. The line to Dalheim was connected directly to the Aachen – Mönchengladbach line via a connecting line at Baal Güterbahnhof / Baal West, which was particularly important for freight traffic to the Sophia-Jacoba colliery .

Passenger traffic between Jülich and Baal was thinned out so much in the 1960s that there were only a few remaining trains on the timetable between the many bus routes. In addition, there was the growing individual traffic. The consequent drop in passenger numbers caused the Deutsche Bundesbahn to stop passenger services between Jülich and Baal on September 29, 1968; the same thing happened on May 28, 1972 with freight traffic. In 1974, the dismantling of the tracks between Baal and Linnich began.

The remaining connection Baal – Dalheim was initially used by the population because of the so-called round trip (a connection via Mönchengladbach - Rheydt - Rheindahlen - Wegberg –Dalheim– Wassenberg –Ratheim – Hückelhoven – Baal (West) - Erkelenz –Rheydt – Mönchengladbach) relatively well received.

In the 1970s, however, the timetable on the northern route from Baal to Dalheim was thinned down to a few trains a day, the round-trip service popular with the population was finally abolished and rail buses running in parallel did the rest: on September 27, 1980, the last passenger train left with a funeral wreath from Baal towards Dalheim / Mönchengladbach.

The freight yard

As a junction, the freight yard was still important for traffic to the Sophia-Jacoba colliery until 2007 , because despite the colliery's closure on March 27, 1997, Deutsche Bahn coal trains continued to run between the Baal freight station and the Ratheim colliery station on Mondays and Wednesdays , as the SJ- Briquette and Extracitfabrik GmbH continued to produce charcoals from anthracite on the old colliery site in Hückelhoven. After the briquette factory was closed in September 2007, the line between Baal and Ratheim was shut down on October 1, 2007. Today it has four tracks.

Todays situation

Of the former tower station, only the upper stop remained, the entry signal for the freight station from the direction of Aachen is a few meters behind the platform. The stop, which is part of the Aachen transport association , is used by around 2000 passengers per day. Since 2002 it has been signposted with Hückelhoven-Baal due to the fact that Baal belongs to the city of Hückelhoven and is also listed as such in timetables. The stop has a partially covered island platform that is accessible from the underpass via a staircase. In 2018, the platform was raised and lengthened for the advance service of the Rhein-Ruhr-Express . An elevator is to be retrofitted by December 2020.

The stop has two bus stops called Baal Bahnhof and a P + R space on the site of the former lower stop on the Jülich – Dalheim line.
