The suspension railway station Vohwinkel - officially Vohwinkel suspension railway - is, next to the train station Wuppertal-Vohwinkel , an important traffic junction in the Wuppertal district of Vohwinkel . It is the western terminus of the Wuppertal suspension railway and provides transfer options between it and bus routes to other Vohwinkel districts, to Düsseldorf , Mettmann , Haan and to a trolleybus route in the direction of Solingen .

The suspension railway station in Vohwinkel is at the end of the so-called land line . It was opened as the end point of the second section of the suspension railway on May 24, 1901 and housed the suspension railway depot from the start. The station was originally located right next to the reception building of the Vohwinkel train station , which, however, was relocated to its current location in 1908, a few hundred meters further east.

In the course of the suspension railway modernization between 1999 and 2014, the Vohwinkler station building from the original period was demolished in 2007 and rebuilt in its current form. During the renovation, the station was passed through without stopping, so that the neighboring Bruch station temporarily served as the terminus. The investment costs in the field of electrical engineering amounted to 1.26 million euros. The Düsseldorf engineering office Wendt was responsible for this.

Solingen circular railway and Solingen trolleybus

On February 6th and 8th, 1896, a contract was signed for the construction of a tram line Solingen-Graefrath-Vohwinkel between the UEG and the cities of Solingen , Graefrath and Vohwinkel , on November 19, 1898 the section Solingen, Central-Graefrath-Vohwinkel was signed opened. The company Solinger Kreisbahn AG , founded on February 13, 1900, took over the railway lines from January 1, 1902, the route to Vohwinkel was served by line V every 15 to 30 minutes. In 1908 the transfer terminus in Vohwinkel was replaced by the use of a track of the Bergische Kleinbahn and the construction of some track connections with a loop. In 1910, line V was renamed "3". After all routes of the Solingen circular railway - with the exception of the section in Vohwinkel - belonged to the city of Solingen after a large incorporation, the Solingen circular railway and the Solingen tram were merged in 1929 and line 3 was extended to Höhscheid. In 1937 line 3 was extended to Burg . As a result of a serious accident on a steep stretch, the conversion of the Solingen tram to trolleybus operation was discussed and implemented. As the last tram line, the 3 was converted to trolleybus operation in three phases between October 1, 1958 and December 1, 1959. When the VRR tariff was introduced in 1980 , the line number was changed to "683".

When the suspension railway station and the scaffolding were dismantled and rebuilt, the line ran with diesel buses.

On August 4, 2014 the trolleybus line 683 was extended via Lienhardplatz to the Wuppertal-Vohwinkel train station and uses the auxiliary diesel drive in this section, as the underpass under the railway tracks did not allow overhead lines due to insufficient height. The one-way overhead line in Rubensstrasse was moved to the other side of the street, so that the trolleybuses now use Rubensstrasse in both directions and are rewired at the Vohwinkel Schwebebahn stop . From the direction of Solingen the vehicles disconnected from the Rubensstrasse stop. The former loop ride still exists, but can no longer be used.

Benrath tram network

On July 10, 1899, the Bergische Kleinbahn tram line from Haan to Vohwinkel was opened. The entire Benrath network was taken over by the city of Düsseldorf on October 1, 1911 and leased to the Rheinbahn . The route was served by the line V Benrath - Hilden - Haan - Oberhaan - Vohwinkel. On May 8, 1961, line V from Benrath to Vohwinkel was discontinued and replaced by buses. Today the 784 bus line serves this route.

District of Mettmann tram

The district of Mettmann tram opened on July 19, 1909 tram routes from Vohwinkel via Dornap to Mettmann and Wülfrath. These routes were taken over by the Rheinbahn in 1937 . Today the 745 bus serves the Vohwinkel – Dornap – Mettmann route.

Connection

In addition to the suspension railway and the trolleybus, some district bus lines and Rheinbahn bus lines stop at the station. The stops are divided into six stopping positions. Numbers 1 and 2 stand for the suspension railway platforms, stops 3 and 4 are on Vohwinkeler Straße, while stops 5 and 6 are on Rubensstraße.

Suspension railway depot

The station is at the western end of the line, it is equipped with a turning loop and switches. The switches allow arrival and departure to and from the operating facilities located to the west of the station. Its carriage hall is 74 meters long and offers space for 27 articulated trains and the historic “ Kaiserwagen ”, which are serviced by a total of 60 employees.

In addition to the storage areas, it also houses the suspension railway workshop . The facilities have three floors: while the parking facilities with two additional loops are located in the middle level, the vehicles are lowered every eight years or 500,000 kilometers for a general inspection. Small repairs are carried out on the upper floor. In addition, employees can inspect the chassis from an intermediate level above the parking facilities when the wagons are there.
