The Alter Markt suspension railway station is the central stop of the Wuppertal suspension railway in the Wuppertal district of Barmen . It is located in the area of ​​the eponymous Old Market and opens up the Barmer pedestrian zone around the Werth . It is also an important hub in the east of Wuppertal.

The modern suspension railway station Alter Markt is in close proximity to the bus station Alter Markt. The DB stop in Wuppertal-Barmen is about 500 meters away on foot. The station opens up Barmen's pedestrian zone and the town hall . Until 1987 this station was also served by tram .

The development of the suspension railway station for pedestrians was solved by an L-shaped tunnel that connects the two sides of the Höhne and then offers a passage under the Fischertal street. Until 2004, this tunnel system also provided access to the two tracks of the tram. It provided access to the neighboring department store in the basement and had a small shopping mall . This has now been replaced by an above-ground pedestrian link, fulfilling the requirement to make the transition to the suspension railway station accessible for the disabled. In addition, this saved renovation costs in the tunnel area and closed a fearful space . This above-ground pedestrian connection made a barrier-free connection possible.

history

The former suspension railway station Rathausbrücke , which was built in Art Nouveau style behind the inner-city square and opened in 1903, was badly damaged in the Second World War and later only temporarily rebuilt. In 1967 the temporary structure was replaced by the current structure as part of the expansion of federal highway 7 into a multi-lane road. Four 38 meter high pylons hold the scaffolding of the suspension railway for a distance of 120 meters above the intersection.

The public transport stops were combined here, which means that the Old Market was only a bus station for a long time . In 2002 the city of Wuppertal decided to give more importance to pedestrian traffic and to upgrade the inner city square. The public transport stops were relocated to Höhne and Steinweg .
