The Hamburg staircase is a listed outside staircase in the Wuppertal district of Uellendahl-Katernberg . According to the Lower Monument Authority , the Hamburg staircase is one of the most elaborate of the preserved historical staircases in the city.

description

The staircase built in 1903 (according to another source 1910) leads up with 72 steps and connects the tall Eschenbeeker Straße with the Hamburger Straße . The Hamburg staircase got its name on December 8, 1903.

The stair structure consists of a straight, single-flight staircase with four intermediate landings with side handrails. The difference in level is mastered between the platforms with 15 steps each. On both sides, portals that lead upwards in a stepped gable close off the building at the level of the row of houses. The archways, which are mirror images of each other, consist of a larger archway flanked by a smaller one with a parapet wall . The arches are supported by a central column with decorated cube capitals . The arches are plastered, with the supports, the parapet wall, the arch stones and the closing stones of the gable made of red sandstone . In the field of the gable the inscription "Zur Hamburger Staircase" is embedded.

According to the Lower Monument Authority, the building is based on medieval forms, combining them with several other style elements, including Art Nouveau - which is reflected in the curved letters of the inscription.

history

On February 26, 1998, the staircase was registered as a monument in the list of monuments of the city of Wuppertal.

In the middle of 2009 the house wall on the stairs was redesigned. In mid-2016 the stairs had to be closed due to a lack of construction on a wall for the safety of passers-by.
