Südfriedhof (Düsseldorf)
The southern cemetery of the city of Düsseldorf is located in the old south of the city, near today's city center between the districts of Bilk and Volmerswerth . It is bounded by the driveway from the Südring to the Kardinal-Frings-Brücke , the residential areas in the vicinity of Volmerswerther Straße and the fields of the farmers and the drinking water supply area of the municipal utilities. The south cemetery has a size of 46.1 ha.
History of the cemetery
The south cemetery, initially 28 hectares in size, was laid out at the beginning of the 20th century; the first burial took place on April 2, 1904. In contrast to the fashion at the time, native woods were chosen for the planting. The cemetery chapel with morgue was completed in 1908. These buildings, which are now under monument protection , were designed by the architect Johannes Radke and the city master builder Max Decker ; the two sculptures of the angel of death on the main portal of the chapel were made by the sculptor Adolf Simatschek .
The layout of the cemetery followed the cross motif including a final roundabout . Today, however, this can no longer be guessed, as the old main path was abandoned and planted in the 1960s.
Around 1000 war graves were laid out in the cemetery for those who fell in the two world wars.
The south cemetery today
The south cemetery is still in use. The planting with deciduous trees is strong and consists mainly of oak, linden, elm and maple trees. The total area is now 46.1 ha.
In addition to the war graves, the graves of honor of the former mayors Karl Arnold , Georg Glock and Josef Gockeln as well as the actor Paul Henckels , known from the German film “ Die Feuerzangenbowle ”, are prominent points. There is also an anonymous urn burial ground.
Due to the entire historical complex, the south cemetery has been a protected garden monument since 1994/95.
