The Herford Station is a junction station with four platforms and seven platform tracks. It lies on the total four-track , electrified main railway line from Hamm (Westfalen) to Minden , a section of the original route of the historic Cologne-Minden Railway Company .

At Herford station, the railway to Altenbeken branches off to the south , and the Ravensberger Bahn to the north to Bünde and Rahden with a connection to the Löhne – Rheine railway .

location

The train station is located in the Radewiger Feldmark, only about 300 m from Herford city center ( Radewig ). It is only a little further to the MARTa Herford art and design museum, which opened in 2005 . The Herford Music School is on the way there. The district administration, the tax office, the technical town hall, the GoParc discotheque and the Radewig and MARTa-Viertel car parks are also close to the train station.

The railway line is in an elevated position so that the streets crossing in the urban area lead through it. The station is almost exactly in a north-south direction.

history

Station building from 1902 with covered access to the adjacent bus platform

Beginnings

On October 15, 1847, Herford was connected to the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft with an initially single-track line. A brick building was erected in 1851 as a temporary station building. A second track was put into operation in 1853 to Bielefeld and in 1854 to Bad Oeynhausen. Between 1873 and 1875 the station facilities were rebuilt and the station building expanded. In 1879 and 1880 a locomotive shed with a turntable , water tower and coal shed was built. On December 31, 1880 the single-track railway line Herford – Himmighausen –Altenbeken was added.

20th century

In 1902 the old station building was replaced by a new building and has since been rebuilt several times. On the junction to Kirchlengern , which is still a single track , operations began on July 1, 1904.

Class 05 steam locomotive at Herford station on March 30, 1953

From 1911 the two freight train tracks were built between Hamm and Minden, which went into operation between 1912 and 1916, so that the line has had four tracks ever since. In this context, the previously ground-level railway line was placed on a dam and the level crossings were replaced by bridges. In addition, new freight and sidings were added, for which the old freight handling had to be canceled. It was rebuilt in 1918 further west at its current location.

During the Second World War, there was only minor damage to the station, which could be repaired relatively quickly. 1954 began with the demolition of the depot .

The main line has been electrified since the mid-1960s. The first electrically hauled train passed through the station on September 29, 1968. The route to Altenbeken followed on May 27, 1975 and the connection to Kirchlengern on September 20, 1976.

In 1975/76 the wooden roofs on the platforms were replaced by steel roofs and a new goods handling facility was built. The station building has been a listed building since 1987. Intercity trains have also stopped in Herford since 1988 . In 1997 the general cargo traffic was stopped. The freight hall , built in 1918, has not been used by the railway since then.

Barrier-free renovation

General

The pedestrian tunnel renovated in 2013

Between December 2008 and mid-2013, the station was made barrier-free , with elevators being installed to the four platforms and tactile guide strips for the visually impaired being laid throughout the station . This also included the renewal of the platform lighting and the wayfinding system. In addition, the surfaces of the platforms were renewed and brought to uniform heights. Outside the platform roofs, which had previously been repaired, new weather shelters were erected. The old freight elevators were expanded. They were connected to the reception building and goods handling via a baggage tunnel.

In the pedestrian tunnel, the floor was renewed, the side walls clad and new signage was installed. In this context, the luggage lockers were removed.

The train destination indicators on the platforms can no longer be seen from the pedestrian tunnel, as they were not installed on the platform side on which the only remaining stairs lead to the platforms, but on the side on which the stairs were removed in favor of the elevators .

The cost of the renovation was around four million euros.

In the past, piercing the passenger tunnel under the freight train tracks was also considered so that the platforms could also have been reached from the west side. However, this was never realized.

Platform 1

Platform 1

The house platform 1 was renewed over a length of 210 meters with a height of 76 centimeters above the top of the rails. From the north there is a direct - but unofficial - access from the station forecourt via a ramp. At the southern end, direct access to the Radewig multi-storey car park, which is right next to the tracks, has been cordoned off. Before the renovation, there were five steps from the parking garage to the platform. This is no longer possible due to the accessibility . An extension of platform 1 by approx. 40 meters, a ramp and a safety fence to platform 1 would have resulted in costs in the six-figure range, according to the railway. Rail travelers who park in the multi-storey car park must now take the detour via the station forecourt.

Platform 2

Track 3 on platform 2,
left track 4 on platform 3

Platform 2 was renewed over a length of 330 meters with a height of 76 centimeters above the top of the rails. The platform parts beyond that remained in their old condition. Originally, the edge of the platform on track 3 was longer than on track 2, which was due to the location of the switches and signals as well as a stump track in front of the head of the northern end of the platform.

Platform 3

Platform 3 was only renewed on platform 4 over the entire length of 406 meters and a width of around two meters. Here, too, the northern and southern sections were increased to 76 centimeters above the top of the rails. On track 5, the new platform covering was only installed in the area of the roof, the stairs and the elevator over a length of 80 meters. To the north and south of it, the old platform surface remained. These platform parts were cordoned off with a sturdy fence so that they could no longer be entered. Track 5 could therefore only be used for overtaking shorter local trains or for longer trains to pass through.

In December 2014 it was announced that platform 3 on track 5 would be completed over a length of 220 meters in connection with the Rhein-Ruhr-Express project . The renovation took place in 2019 and ended with the timetable change in December 2019.

Platform 4

Platform 4 was raised at the north and south end over a length of approx. 40 meters from 38 centimeters to 76 centimeters above the top of the rail. This means that it has a uniform height over the entire length of 405 meters.

Operational peculiarities

From April 11 to August 27, 2011, Herford was the start and end station of trains on IC line 55. During extensive construction work, traffic on the east-west axis between Bielefeld and Berlin had to be thinned out. Therefore, the IC line Cologne - Leipzig was divided into two sections and only ran between Cologne and Herford and between Hanover and Leipzig. During this time, there was no IC line 55 between Herford and Hanover. Passengers to and from Hanover either had to use the ICE trains between Bielefeld and Hanover or take local trains. The IC trains usually arrived from Cologne in the odd hour at minute 27 (e.g. 9:27 a.m.) on platform 7 and stood there for an hour to be able to travel in the even hour at the same minute (e.g. 10:27 a.m.) to leave for Cologne.

There was a similar mode of operation on IC line 55 from December 27 to 29, 2017, because the four-track line had to be closed to all trains due to a bridge demolition in Bad Oeynhausen.

From March 13 to October 13, 2019, no long-distance trains stopped in Herford. Only between 6:30 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. did an Intercity train and an ICE train to Cologne stop every day. The reason was bridge construction work in Bielefeld, through which the long-distance trains were led on a longer section over the freight train tracks, which meant that the journey time could not be adhered to. In order to make up for the resulting delays, there were no stops on IC line 55 in Herford and Gütersloh. The trains on IC line 32 were largely diverted. There were also restrictions in local transport during the period mentioned.

Responsibilities and departments

From April 1, 1895 to 1949, Herford was part of the Hanover Railway Directorate , then to the Hanover Federal Railway Directorate until 1972 . After the dissolution and amalgamation of some Federal Railway Directorates, the station was assigned to the Federal Railway Directorate Essen on June 1, 1972 . The border with the Hanover Federal Railway Directorate was between the Herford and Löhne stations . In 1994 the federal railway directorates were dissolved.

Until 1954 there was a railway depot (Bw) in Herford . Until the beginning of the 1990s, the station belonged to the Bielefeld Railway Maintenance Department, the Bielefeld News Office and the Gütersloh Building Construction Railway Maintenance Department . Until then there was also the goods handling department in Herford. Today there is no longer any Deutsche Bahn office in Herford. Apart from the signal box and the travel center, there are no longer any DB employees in Herford.

Price class (formerly station category)

Herford station is looked after by the rail subsidiary DB Station & Service AG . Since 2012 it has belonged to station category 2, to which a total of 87 stations in Germany belong. In December 2017, the station categories were replaced by price classes, whereby the price classes correspond to the previous categories.

In addition to Herford train station, Bielefeld central train station and Paderborn central train station in Ostwestfalen-Lippe also reach price class 2. All other train stations have been classified in price classes 3 to 7. The price classes are included in the station price list of DB Station & Service AG.

service

Number of trains and travelers

In 2018 185 trains stopped in Herford every day, with up to 12,000 passengers.

Long-distance transport

The station is served by two intercity lines for long-distance passenger transport:

line Line course Tact
IC 32 Berlin Südkreuz - Hanover  - Herford  - Bielefeld  - Dortmund  - Duisburg  - Cologne 120 min (Fri / Sun)
IC 55 Dresden  - Leipzig  - Magdeburg  - Hanover - Herford  - Bielefeld - Dortmund - Wuppertal  - Cologne 120 min
See also: List of Intercity Train Stations

There are other direct connections in the morning to Basel via Frankfurt Airport and Freiburg (Breisgau) . On Fridays and Sundays in particular, there are other direct connections from individual trains on IC line 32 to Aachen , Frankfurt am Main , Karlsruhe , Stuttgart , Tübingen , Stralsund and Binz on the island of Rügen . Individual ICE trains also run from and to Hanover and Basel or from Berlin Ostbahnhof to Cologne.

While the service in local traffic is relatively constant except for thinning at the weekend, the long-distance traffic stops have been adapted more and more to demand over the years. On Fridays and Sundays, more trains on the Cologne - Berlin route stop in Herford on IC line 32, which runs between Herford and Hanover without stopping, than in the rest of the time. As a result of this and due to further adjustments to demand, there are considerable fluctuations in the long-distance transport offer in Herford within a week. In the 2019/2020 timetable year, only 16 ICE or IC trains stop on Saturdays, while 29 ICE / IC trains stop on Fridays and Sundays. On the other days of the week Herford has between 18 and 21 long-distance train stops.

Local transport

In rail transport Herford is Bielefeld 's second largest railway hub in the regional transport of East Westphalia-Lippe and is supported by various regional express - and regional trains operated -line. From the direction of Paderborn to Bielefeld and from the direction of Osnabrück to Paderborn, the connection is usually made on the same platform (tracks 2 and 3), but not in the opposite direction. Since January 2018 there has also been a connection to Hengelo in the Netherlands

Freight train tracks and freight yard

Next to passenger track 7 are the two continuous main tracks 8 and 9 of the freight train line Hamm – Minden and the freight train overtaking track 10. The adjacent tracks 11 to 15 can be used as stabling tracks. The next tracks with the numbers 16 to 25, which are no longer needed, are partially overgrown and disconnected from the signal box.

The extensive freight train systems that were built in the 1870s are rarely used today. These include parking, shunting, loading and pull-out tracks, head and side ramps, loading streets, a road roller system , goods handling with a goods hall, scales for trucks and railway wagons and transfer tracks for the sidings . Until 1959 there was a turntable with a locomotive shed in the area between Sophienstrasse and the goods hall . Today there is a parking lot there.

In addition to the regularly used tracks 1 to 10, there are a total of 16 tracks or track sections in the station's portfolio that could be used if necessary.

Post loading tracks

To the north of the reception building, at the level of the signal box, there is a former post office platform with two tracks, where parcels and mail bags were loaded and unloaded until the 1960s. The mail and luggage carts were able to drive onto the platform via a driveway from the street “Am Bahndamm”.

Tracks, switches and signals

A map of the Herford train station from 1987, which was still valid in 1993, shows a total of 50 tracks with 45 track sections, 101 turnouts , 31 main signals (some with distant signals) and 10 separate distant signals or repeater . However, some parts of the former freight yard are no longer used.

Track connections

There are three sidings within the urban area, but none of them are in operation anymore.

Since 1884, a siding has led to the Herford brewery north of the station . After several turning and sawing trips , the second siding leading to the Sulo company could also be reached via this track since 1961 . Sulo had previously had a meter-gauge siding on the Herford small railway , which in 1961 was given a direct connection to the Herford train station by installing a third rail. Since the shutdown of the Herford small railway in 1966, other companies in the Goebenstrasse area were also directly connected to the former Deutsche Bundesbahn via these tracks. At the end of 2002, the Deutsche Bahn stopped operating the sidings.

South of the train station in the Diebrock district, a siding was built in the 1970s into the newly created industrial area. a. by Wellcarton and Viessmann.

Old freight yard / freight hall

The former freight hall , which was built in 1918 , has not been used by the railway since 1997, when general cargo traffic was discontinued. It was bought by the city of Herford in 2004 and then renovated. Today it is used under the name "Alter Güterbahnhof" as an event hall for trade fairs (e.g. Herbstzeitlos), markets, exhibitions, concerts, fashion shows and the like. On an area of 3,615 square meters there are three halls and the former goods handling area. Up to 2,000 visitors are allowed there for events.

Signal box

The signal box Hf

The Hf interlocking , which is an extension of the house platform to the north, is a Siemens push-button interlocking of the Sp Dr S60 design. From there, the entire area of the Herford train station is served. The two level crossings equipped with full barriers on Elverdisser and Ahmser Strasse as well as some smaller level crossings with flashing lights and / or half barriers on the Herford – Himmighausen route are monitored from there.

Up to the commissioning of the track diagram interlocking on June 25, 1978, there were electromechanical interlockings Hmf, Hn, Ho and Hs in Herford.

Top speeds

To the south and north of the station, passenger trains passing through tracks 4 and 6 can travel a maximum of 160 km / h. To the north of the platforms, however, the route is in an arc, so that there can only be driven at a maximum of 140 km / h over a length of 1,000 meters in the direction of Hanover and over a length of 900 meters in the direction of Bielefeld.

The maximum speed on freight train tracks 8 and 9 is 120 km / h. On a length of 500 meters in the direction of Hanover and 200 meters in the direction of Bielefeld, however, only 110 km / h can be driven.

In the direction of Altenbeken you can leave the station at a maximum of 40 km / h. After 800 meters you can accelerate to 70 km / h. The arriving trains have to brake from 70 km / h to 40 km / h for the last 900 meters.

Exiting trains in the direction of Kirchlengern can travel a maximum of 40 km / h for the first 700 meters, then 100 km / h are allowed. When entering the station from the direction of Kirchlengern, the 40 km / h section is 800 meters long.

Transport links
