Local traffic in the Herford district

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The transport in Herford consists of a well-developed rail network, three urban bus networks , regional bus lines , each city or local bus lines and numerous bus routes for school transport . The North Rhine-Westphalian district consists of the urban agglomeration of Herford - Bünde - Löhne with a total of approx. 180,000 inhabitants and a peripheral area with the cities and communities of Rödinghausen , Vlotho and Spenge . The district town of Herford and Hiddenhausen have the greatest population density , the town of Enger forms the southwestern transition to rural settlement, Kirchlengern only belongs to the agglomeration with the southern municipality. There are strong ties to the neighboring city of Bielefeld to the south .

According to the road traffic office, 166,154 vehicles (cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, etc.) were registered in the Herford district on January 1, 2010, of which 141,952 were cars. That is 564 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, which is the second highest density of cars in North Rhine-Westphalia corresponds. The Rheinisch-Bergische Kreis took first place with 572 cars per 1,000 inhabitants.

The Herford and Bünde train stations are connected to the IC network.

history

Rail transport

The main lines of today's railway network were built in the mid-19th century. In the Herford district, these were the Hamm – Minden railway line (1847) and the Löhne – Rheine line (1855). The former main line - today a single-track branch line - along the Weser ( Elze – Löhne line ) went into operation in 1875. The Bünde-Rahden-Bremen line was built as a further long-distance connection at the turn of the century . The rail network was completed by the former Herford small railway (1900-1966) Spenge - Enger - Herford - Bad Salzuflen - Vlotho. In Enger, the line was connected to the Bielefeld district railways . In addition, there was a small railway Kirchlengern - Löhne - Mennighüffen - Oberlübbe ( Wallücker Willem ) from 1897 to 1937 . The station wages had as of transit or freight station formerly a prominent role today is the station Herford the most important regional station in the region.

The importance of regional rail traffic has declined sharply since the 1970s. The Ravensberger Bahn and also the Weser line were threatened with closure. Weekend traffic was moved to the road (Herford - Bünde - Rahden bus route ). Only the transport association in connection with a synchronization and privatization of the offers changed the situation fundamentally (community tariff from June 2000).

Minden-Ravensberg transport company

City bus of the former VMR at Herford train station in February 2011

Between 1927 and 1931, the Minden-Ravensberg electricity company (from 1982 Minden-Ravensberg VMR transport company) gradually took over the shares in the Herford small railway. The company built an intercity bus network in the Herford and Minden-Lübbecke districts (see also local transport in Minden ) and developed a city bus system in Herford. In August 1994, the VMR started an attempt to introduce a new, clearer route network. However, this turned out to be hardly passable and led to strong protests in the population due to poor planning. The changes were withdrawn completely after just six months. There was a significant loss of image for the company.

The area served by the VMR included all places in the district except for Bünde, Rödinghausen, Kirchlengern and parts of Hiddenhausen. Fundamental changes in the use of means of transport (including an increase in the importance of regional rail and individual transport and thus passenger relocations) combined with high income deficits made savings urgently necessary. Connections with little demand have been gradually replaced by dial-a-bus routes. After restructuring and due to competitive conditions, the company had to give up most of its city traffic in Vlotho and Löhne. In 2007 a night bus line was set up between Herford and Spenge at a special rate. In 2009, additional night and “disco buses” were introduced on an experimental basis - also at special rates. The trips in the city of Herford were stopped at the end of May 2010 due to low demand. In mid-2010 the company announced its dissolution at the end of June 2011, on January 19, 2011 the VMR had to file for bankruptcy. Since no operating company wanted to find itself for the independent operation of bus traffic on the VMR network, the authority responsible for the district of Herford subsequently placed a Europe-wide tender through its authority company mhv. The economically best offer was subsequently accepted and on June 12, 2011, it took over the operation of the VMR network of DB Bahn Ostwestfalen-Lippe-Bus ( Busverkehr Ostwestfalen GmbH BVO) on behalf of the Herford district.

Herford

Rendezvous at the Old Market in Herford

At the end of the 1990s, a modern bus station with roofed access was built at Herford train station , which was then heavily frequented by buses . There was a very well developed city network with two central points at the Old Market and the train station:

  • 401 : Oetinghausen / Eickum - Dickenbrock - Engerstraße - train station - Alter Markt - Ortsieker Weg - Magdeburger Straße
  • 402/412 : Falkendiek - Eimterstraße (412) - Werrestraße - Lübbertor - Alter Markt - Ahmser Straße - Schobeke (412) - Ahmsen
  • 403 : (Bahnhof -) Alter Markt - Maiwiese - Erika-Friedhof
  • 404 : Kiebitzstraße - train station - Alter Markt - Stiftbergstraße - Stadtholzstraße - zoo
  • 407 : Easter bonfire - Old Market - Bergertor - Kastanienallee - Hamscheberg
  • 413 : Train station - Alter Markt - Elverdisser Straße - Elverdissen , Nasse Welle
  • 426 : Dieselstraße - train station - Alter Markt - Mindener Straße - Ortsieker Weg - Klinikum - Amselplatz
  • 436 : Otterheiderweg - Bielefelder Straße - train station - Alter Markt - Ortsieker Weg - Clinic - Amselplatz
  • 439 : Tierpark - Stiftbergstrasse - Alter Markt - Sachsenstrasse - Salzufler Strasse - Friedenstal , Ellersieker Bach (- Tierpark)

In November 2003, the existing city bus network was optimized and streamlined in cooperation with the city. The new “innovative” city bus system consists of only six lines (S1 to S6). What was new was a rendezvous concept with a meeting point at the Alter Markt, combined with waiting times afterwards (the buses no longer continue immediately). Lines were withdrawn from the train station and the offer was greatly reduced. Up until now, buses alternated between 10 and 20 minutes via Alter Markt to Ortsieker Weg (8 stops); Due to the system, there was now a 30-minute cycle, with all buses driving one behind the other at the same time. The waiting time at the Alter Markt resulted in significant travel time losses for passengers from / to the train station, and the train station connection became unattractive. There were protests against the newly introduced dial-a-ride buses to Hamscheberg, so they were soon replaced by city buses.

Frets

Bus service by private companies is traditionally anchored in Bünde and the adjacent areas. At the station frets a modern bus station was built. In 1998, Bünde introduced two city bus routes. In several stages (December 2001 to 2004), a city bus system with four lines today was created. As an innovative concept, regional lines were integrated through the use of minibuses in the surrounding area and broken lines. A covered bus platform in the city center was created as a central meeting point for direct crossings without wasting time. Initially, midibuses were used .

Wages

The introduction of a city bus system was discussed in Löhne, but a decision was not made in the city council due to the high expected costs. In April 2003 the offer was changed. The new network, introduced as “ WerreBus ”, replaced numerous previous bus routes with minibuses for calls. The offer was changed over to "taxi buses" in several steps according to demand. Initially there was regular bus service every hour, Bischofshagen, Heimatmuseum - EMR-Platz - Ostscheid (line 431).

In Bad Oeynhausen in particular, there were numerous protests from passengers about the necessary calls. Most of the inner-city services in Bad Oeynhausen were switched back to regular service at the beginning of the “WerreBus” after almost complete conversion to call service.

Vlotho

For decades, the urban area was only served by intercity or regional buses. The VMR lines ran every hour

  • 408 : Minden - Hausberge - Holzhausen - Uffeln - Kirchplatz - train station - Bad Seebruch - Bad Senkelteich (from the train station to Bad Senkelteich every two hours)
  • 433 : Herford train station - Alter Markt - Wiesestrasse - Friedenstal - Bad Salzuflen - Exter - Kirchplatz - train station - Winterberg, beautiful view
  • 457 : Lohe (Bad Oeynhausen) - Südstadt - ZOB Bad Oeynhausen train station - Rehme - Babbenhausen - train station - Kirchplatz - Bonneberg

From September 2001 Stadtwerke Vlotho GmbH built a modern city bus system based on minibuses and call lines. One of the goals was to provide all parts of the city with regular offers. The existing regional lines were broken in several steps.

In December 2010, VlothoBus GmbH , a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Vlotho, took over urban bus transport. The dial-a-ride buses were again replaced by fixed hourly service, but still with minibuses. There is now a trip in both directions on three ring lines in order to shorten travel times every 2 hours. Today there is only school service to Hausberge in the direction of Minden (formerly line 408). During the changeover in 2011 , line 434, which now only runs from Exter via Schwarzenmoor to Herford, was served by BVO again after a short interruption from Vlotho station to Herford and back. Previously, the section from Exter to Vlotho station was integrated into the new system as "S1" in the Vlotho city bus system. In regional bus traffic, there had previously been a change of operator to BVO.

Regional bus transport

The local transport plan for the Herford district from 2003 differentiates the bus offer according to function types: rail extension ( express bus with high quality standard and night bus), connection of municipalities ( regional bus ) and development (of municipalities and their surroundings). As a result, buses have been given a secondary role compared to rail transport, in which the feeder and development function is in the foreground and these are almost no longer of any national importance. Bus connections across several municipalities were dismantled or broken in all cases where there was even approximately parallel operation (example: bus Bünde – Enger – Bielefeld / train Bünde – Herford – Bielefeld). Because of the excellently developed rail network, only one express bus line has been set up in the district so far (465). Express buses would be a parallel service almost everywhere, but there are some ways to improve connections for services beyond the district boundary.

There are also numerous lines for school traffic. Weekend operations include the offers on Saturday afternoons as well as on Sundays and public holidays.

The ALF offers (“call line trip”, mostly referred to as “TaxiBus” in the Herford district, use especially on Saturdays) run at the normal rate. Registration is required at least 30 minutes in advance using a special 0180 number (special tariffs for calls by mobile phone ).

City transport

Herford city bus

The Herford city bus system is based on a rendezvous system with a central meeting point on the Alter Markt. Most of the city lines run every 30 minutes. Regional lines to Bad Salzuflen (S3 / 433), Vlotho (S4 / 434) and Bielefeld- Milse (S2 / 352) are integrated into the system . The station is served by two lines which, due to the nature of the system, run one behind the other to Ortsiekerweg. The cycle density is therefore low compared to the large supply of trains. Connection times from train to bus are sometimes very short and therefore not guaranteed; there are no connections to some trains.

The Bünde city bus system integrates regional lines to Rödinghausen and Kirchlengern through transfer connections in minibuses. The museum square in the immediate vicinity of the pedestrian zone serves as the central bus meeting point. There is also an information office of the Stadtverkehrsgesellschaft Bünde mbH . All vehicles arrive at the covered bus platform at the same time, thus enabling direct transfers . The operator of the city bus routes is Busverkehr Ostwestfalen GmbH . The districts of Ahle and Holsen are not connected to the city bus network.

Operation ends around 7:00 p.m. (on Saturdays at around 2:00 p.m.). The city buses don't run on Sundays.

There is a central bus station (ZOB) right next to the Bünde train station . This is the end point of the remaining regional network and is served by a city bus line.

City traffic in wages

City traffic in Löhne is marketed under the brand name “ Werre-Bus ” in cooperation with the directly adjacent city of Bad Oeynhausen . Most of the lines operate in call mode. The regional lines 425, 430 and 615 run as regular buses.

  • 425 : Erich-Maria-Remarque-Platz / train station - Löhne-Ort - Herford (every hour)

City bus Vlotho

The city bus system of VlothoBusGmbH (a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Vlotho GmbH ) currently consists of four lines. Line 434 / VB1 is operated by DB Bahn Ostwestfalen-Lippe-Bus and runs every hour from Monday to Friday and every two hours on Saturdays and Sundays. Lines S2, S3 and S4 are operated by VlothoBus itself with minibuses and run on ring lines that are served every two hours in each direction. These go to the Vlotho, Rathaus, In der Grund and Kirchplatz stops on every journey, i.e. every hour regardless of the direction.

  • S5 : Bahnhof - Kirchplatz - Südstraße - Am Wasserwerk - Bad Senkelteich - Linnenbeeke - Bad Seebruch - Waldfreibad - Weizenkamp - Kirchplatz - Bahnhof

The Westphalian tariff applies in the TeutoOWL network.

Night traffic

On weekend nights at around 1:30 am, a regional express runs on the Minden – Löhne – Herford – Bielefeld route. A night bus line connects Herford with Enger and Spenge. In 2009, additional night and disco lines were set up on a trial basis at special rates between the most important cities in the district. The N12 Ennigloh – Bünde – Hiddenhausen – Herford – Bielefeld line has been running since October 2010.

Local transport tariffs

The district belongs to the tariff association "Der Sechser" ( OWL Verkehr GmbH ). Association tickets are valid on all daily regional and city transport routes, there are special special tariffs for night and “DiscoBus” (“six-person tickets” and the NRW tariff are not recognized). On the N12 line, the Bielefeld night tariff applies with the right to transfer to other night buses in Bielefeld.

Because of its location in Lower Saxony , the Bruchmühlen stop is not included in the tariff association.
