history

The reconstruction of the gatehouse of the Bruchmühlen estate

The damp lowland around Bruchmühlen was settled in the 14th century. The Brocmole estate in what is now Lower Saxony, mentioned in 1322, gave Bruchmühlen its name. This former moated castle ( Burg Bruchmühlen ) is only preserved in remnants. In the district of Melle formed Bruchmühlen never own community. The current district corresponded to the municipal areas of the communities Düingdorf and Bennien. Even when new large municipalities were formed in 1970, no new Bruchmühlen municipality was formed from these two municipalities. In 1970, Bennien was incorporated into the new larger municipality of Riemsloh ; Düingdorf initially remained an independent municipality. In 1972 the district of Melle was dissolved and the communities of the former district were combined to form the new town of Melle. The districts were completely reorganized. The area of the municipality of Riemsloh now existed as the Riemsloh district in the city of Melle. Bennien, however, were spun off from the Riemsloh district after the formation of the Melle community and from then on formed the Bruchmühlen district together with the old community of Düingdorf. The name was chosen in reference to the historic Bruchmühlen estate. The background for the "unification" of Bennien and Düingdorf was the development of Bruchmühlen, which developed apart from the small farmers' communities of Düingdorf and Bennien into the main town of the district and is located exactly on the former border between Bennien and Düingdorf.

The southernmost district (former municipality of West Kilver) in the neighboring North Rhine-Westphalian Rödinghausen has also been called Bruchmühlen since 1968/69 , so that since 1972 a district of Bruchmühlen in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia have bordered one another.
