The Else is a left tributary of the Werre in north-eastern North Rhine-Westphalia and in southern Lower Saxony . The Else arises as a special hydrological feature at a bifurcation .

Emergence

The Else has no spring , but arises as a hydrological specialty through bifurcation . The bifurcation is located near Gesmold (city of Melle ) in Lower Saxony , where the Else branches off from the Hase (Hase river kilometer 158.9). The bifurcation may have been artificially created or relocated. It is at least artificially maintained. In the course of history there have been conflicts over the distribution of the amount of water, which can now be regulated by a building. In the event of a dispute, all the water is said to have been diverted to either the Hase or the Else. Today around a third of the incoming water is diverted from the hare at the bifurcation. In contrast to the Else, the Hase flows northwest of the Ems , while the Else takes the eastern route towards the Weser .

The Else flows into the Werre : the Else on the left, the Werre on the right and in the background

The Else flows leisurely through the Ravensberger Mulde and overcomes only around 28 m difference in altitude over a length of around 35.2 km. The Else mostly flows through a damp lowland, the Elseauen. The Else also flows through a valley ( glacial valley of the Else-Werre-Niederung or Osnabrück valley ) that is bordered to the south by the Teutoburg Forest and to the north by the Wiehengebirge ridge . After the bifurcation in Melle , it flows east to North Rhine-Westphalia , crosses the state border at river kilometer 19.2 and crosses Rödinghausen and Bünde , before after a total length of about 35 km at the eastern border of Kirchlengern into the Werre ( Werre kilometer 12.7 ) opens. The Werre bends at the mouth by almost 90 ° to the east, so it takes the west-east direction of flow of the Else. The Else crosses the federal motorway 30 three times (near Gesmold (KM33), near Bruchmühlen (KM 22) and near Bünde (KM 15). The Elsetalbrücke spans the Else near Kirchlengern . The Else is dammed several times along the entire stretch of the river. A particularly high density Barrages are located on the lower reaches between Bünde and the mouth, because here the flow speed of the Else is regulated over a short distance by 4 barrages.

Catchment area

The catchment area of the Else has a size of 414.6 km². Around 100,000 people live in the catchment area.

The following municipalities are located on the Else:

The catchment area also includes, in whole or in part:

nature

Site plan of the nature reserves

On the North Rhine-Westphalian side, two nature reserves of the same name and bordering Elseaue with a total size of 117 hectares in Bünde (about 74.21 hectares) and Kirchlengern (about 41.3 hectares) on the banks of the Else have been designated since 1994 and 1995 respectively . The area lies north of the Else and south of the Löhne - Osnabrück railway line on an approximately 3.5 km long section of the river. The area is protected because the area is a near-natural Au valley in the middle of the intensively agricultural Ravensberger Land . In the floodplain, the remains of the old river courses of the Else can be seen. Most of the floodplain is characterized by grassland with flood turf. The up to 3 m high cliffs in the area are habitat for the kingfisher .

tourism

There is an association for canoeing in Bünde . Due to the good water quality, fishing is always possible. In addition, the Else-Werre-Radweg leads along the river and further from the confluence with the Werre to the Weser.
