geography

Topography of the urban area

Geographical location

Hiddenhausen is in the Ravensberger Mulde between the Teutoburg Forest and the Wiehen Mountains . The closest major cities are Bielefeld, 20 km to the south, and Osnabrück, 50 km to the west . The eastern part lies in the river plains of the Werre , which mainly forms the border in the east. The lowest point is around 55  m above sea level. NN in the north, where the Werre leaves the urban area towards Löhne / Kirchlengern . About half of the municipal area is less than 100 m. The highest point is the Schweichler Berg 165  m above sea level. NN height. Coming from Enger , the Brandbach flows through the municipality on the western border and in the northwest. It then flows on through Bünde and Kirchlengern, only to unite like the Werre with the Else . In the south, the Düsedieksbach drains the southern Hiddenhausen.

geology

Geothermal map of Hiddenhausen

Most of the natural area belongs to the Ravensberger Mulde , a gently undulating, between 50 and 140  m above sea level. NN lying hill country . Numerous small valleys (so-called Sieke ) often cut suddenly and deeply into the otherwise poorly coupled land. Geologically, there are essentially lias plates with loess overlay , which were transformed into hilly areas through the breakdown in the Pleistocene . Under the loess cover there are sometimes bed debris . Another legacy of the Ice Ages are the boulders that are often found .

In most locations, Hiddenhausen offers good to very good use of geothermal heat sources by means of geothermal probes and heat recovery using heat pump heating systems (see the adjacent map).

Expansion and use of the municipal area

Land use

The shape of the municipality resembles an octagon . Hiddenhausen has an area of 23.87 km², making it the smallest municipality in the Herford district . The north-south and west-east extension are about 5 km.

Hiddenhausen is heavily sprawled and forms a largely continuous agglomeration with the cities of Herford and Bünde . The population density is the highest in the densely populated Herford district . The unpopulated country has hardly any large forest areas. Due to its high fertility, the area is part of the old settlement area and, like the rest of the Herford district, is used intensively for agriculture. Mainly grain and maize are cultivated in the fertile loess areas , but also, increasingly, rapeseed. The following table shows the exact land use.

In the long-term mean (1981-2010) the region had an average of 1583 hours of sunshine per year (observation station: Herford). The long-term average of the weather data for Hiddenhausen should not deviate significantly from the data given from Herford, as the cities are roughly the same height and in a comparable natural area on the Werre. history

Early to 800

The oldest human traces in Hiddenhausen can be assigned to the Middle Stone Age . Due to the somewhat elevated and thus flood-proof altitude on the Werre, the area was suitable for settlement. For example, Stone Age axes , small stone tools ( microliths ) and a Neolithic hilltop settlement were found on the Schweichler Berg. In the west, burial mounds from the Bronze Age and a bronze knife were also found. More than 400 ( urn ) graves date from the pre-Roman Iron Age . From 450 BC More than 250 fire pit graves date back to the 4th century BC  . The bronze sculpture known as the “Eilshauser Ente” was enclosed in one of these graves from the more recent pre-Roman times, while another contained an extensive jewelry collection. The 68 fire pit graves discovered in 1932 date from the 1st to 3rd centuries AD and contained fragments of imported Roman goods. A melting furnace, remains of a house, fragments of a Roman amphora, silver jewelery and two Roman coins date from the time of the Great Migration (AD 400–800). However, these indications of permanent settlement at this unusually early period cannot be continuously substantiated.

Middle Ages and Reformation period (until 1614)

Settlement can only be proven again around 800. At this time, all of today's parts of the community were already present as small, Saxon farmers, which developed into villages in the Middle Ages. In the early 10th century, today's Evangelical Lutheran. Church founded in the parish part of (Alt-) Hiddenhausen and consecrated to St. Gangolf . At that time the parish included the villages of Hiddenhausen, Eilshausen, Oetinghausen and Lippinghausen and later also Bustedt. Most of the lands and farms belonged to the Herford Imperial Abbey . The abbess of Herford had her summer residence in the “Sundern” forest area. First the noblemen of Cologne acted as secular patrons, then later the Counts of Ravensberg , whose knight Heinrich Ledebur built Bustedt Castle in 1415. After a lost feud , Ledebur had to give way to the fortified castle near Spenge in 1417 ; henceforth the castle belonged to the office of Enger . From around 1556, all of today's parts of the community belonged to the County of Ravensberg .

Linen weaver time until 1860

In 1614, the county and with it the current municipal area fell to Brandenburg- Prussia . In the 17th and 18th centuries, flax cultivation and processing of flax into linen began in Hiddenhausen (as elsewhere in the Ravensberger Land) . Often, however, flax cultivation was only a secondary activity or filling activity for the less labor-intensive winter months. In 1798 the property of the women's monastery, including the forest and previously communal areas, was divided up. In the course of this division, Sundern also became an independent municipality. New settlers were given by the old farmers as leaseholders or new farmers those of these newly divided areas that they could not cultivate themselves (for reasons of capacity). In 1827, 75 leaseholders and new farmers settled in scattered settlements in Hiddenhausen and displaced the forest. Previously, the farmers settled in closed jetties . From 1808 to 1810 Hiddenhausen belonged to the Kingdom of Westphalia and from 1810 to 1813 directly to France , then again to Prussia. In 1843 the five parishes of the parish of Hiddenhausen were combined with eleven parishes of the rural canton of Herford to form one administrative district, the "Office Herford-Hiddenhausen". At that time Schweicheln-Bermbeck and Sundern still belonged to the rural canton of Herford. This office lasted until 1968.

Cigar maker time until 1945

Around 1860 the cigar industry, which had its center in Bünde , also began to expand to Hiddenhausen and opened branches. Around 1900 the first Hiddenhausen citizens became cigar manufacturers themselves. Between 1920 and 1930 there were around 70 tobacco factories in Hiddenhausen. The Felsenkeller brewery was founded in 1878, and the Meyer margarine factory in 1894, which, as a forerunner of the EMR (founded in 1909), supplied parts of Hiddenhausen with self-generated electricity. The furniture industry gradually developed into the primary industry in Hiddenhausen and replaced the tobacco industry in its importance. The Cologne-Mindener Railway was built in 1847, followed by the opening of the Herford-Bünde and Herford Kleinbahnen railway lines in 1900; This gave Hiddenhausen connections to the rail network.

After the Second World War

Between 1818 and 1978 the population of Hiddenhausen increased nine-fold. In 1959 a waterworks was built in Hiddenhausen. Today's municipality of Hiddenhausen was formed by the regional reform in 1969 from the Herford-Hiddenhausen office . A town hall was inaugurated in Lippinghausen in 1974; the administrative seat was moved to the municipality of Hiddenhausen. In 1976 a school center was opened and in 1977 a sports hall.

The area of today's municipality of Hiddenhausen was once reached by the meter-gauge Herford small railway from Wallenbrück to Vlotho , which was completed in 1903 ; There were train stations in Oetinghausen (demolished in 1978) and "Oetinghauser Heide" (also demolished); Oetinghausen also connected the Meyer margarine factory in Lippinghausen to the rail network through a siding that was more than two kilometers long. The Herford small railroad had been electrified since 1930. In 1966 the Herford small railways were stopped; the tracks were dismantled soon afterwards.

Incorporations

Today's municipality of Hiddenhausen was reorganized by the law on the reorganization of the Herford district and the independent city of Herford on December 12, 1968. Since January 1, 1969, it has consisted of the previously independent communities of Eilshausen, Hiddenhausen, Lippinghausen, Oetinghausen, Schweicheln-Bermbeck and Sundern, all of which belonged to the Herford-Hiddenhausen office - not necessarily its predecessor, the parish of Hiddenhausen, but the rural canton Herford. Small areas of the community also belonged to the previously independent communities Südlengern and Bustedt . There have been no further incorporations since 1969.

Buildings / monuments

Gut Bustedt

Gut Bustedt

The moated castle Gut Bustedt is located in the northwest of the municipality and is used today as a biology center. It was built in 1415 by the knight Heinrich Ledebur as a moated castle. After a lost feud, Ledeburg had to leave the castle, which then fell to the Counts of Ravensberg. The castle was converted into a moated castle from 1649 by Wolf-Ernst Eller, a confidante of the Great Elector of Brandenburg. In 1964 the now largely dilapidated property was acquired by the Herford-Hiddenhausen office. The buildings are laid out on two islands that define the outer and main castle. On the main castle is the manor house with residential tower, the buildings were built between 1649 and 1662. On the outer castle, which can be reached via a baroque bridge, there was a cow house and a Bauhaus until the 19th century. When the Herford-Hiddenhausen office bought the estate, the agricultural land was sold. The municipality of Hiddenhausen became the owner of the property after the municipal regional reform and initially considered demolishing the building due to the lack of possible uses. At the beginning of the 1980s the idea of a biology center was developed, which finally moved into the estate in 1982 after extensive renovation work. In this training center, school classes from all over North Rhine-Westphalia are familiarized with the world of biology . Over 30,000 children and young people visit this facility every year. Couples can also be married in the estate. Two rooms with restored wall paintings from the Napoleonic era are available for this. The Bustedt estate is the landmark of the community of Hiddenhausen.

House Hiddenhausen / Gut Consbruch

House Hiddenhausen

The Hiddenhausen house (also: Gut Consbruch) is a noble seat owned by the von Consbruch family, who have owned the estate since 1701. The beginnings of the residence go back about 300 years, when the Nagel family began to buy up farms and basic rent ( tithes ) in Hiddenhausen, Oetinghausen and Eilshausen . They thus became the landlords of the farmers concerned. The Consbruch family, who took over the house from the Nagel family in 1701, including the associated basic rights, provided the bailiff von Enger; The Hiddenhausen house was the administrative seat for the municipalities of Spenge , Enger and Hiddenhausen. This is why the house is also called the office building. In their function as bailiffs, the Consbruchs were notaries , arbitrators and judges at the same time . The buildings with the manor house as the center date from the 17th and 18th centuries and are built in the Baroque style. In the three associated half-timbered barns, among other things, the taxes (tithes) of the farmers in the area were stored. The wood craft museum is also housed in these farm buildings. The listed property also includes a listed park.

Evangelical Lutheran Parish Church of St. Gangolf

St. Gangolf in Hiddenhausen is a basically Romanesque parish church from the early days of Christianization in Westphalia around 800. It is one of the oldest churches in East Westphalia.

Niederbäumer farm

Niederbäumer farm

The Niederbäumer farm in Sundern is located on the site of the former summer residence “Solitüde” of the abbess of the Herford women's monastery . This was also a place of refuge from the plague and the turmoil of the Reformation . Solitüde was demolished in 1756, only the farm yard, from which the goods of the Sundern abbey were managed, remained. When the women's foundation was dissolved as a result of secularization, the property fell to the state of Prussia . He divided up the abbey's goods and sold them. The estate was bought by the Niederbäumer family. AH Niederbäumer tore down the old buildings in 1819 and replaced them with today's four-column half-timbered courtyard with its richly carved Deelentorrahmen.

Trumpet angel

Some of the courtyards in Hiddenhausen have richly designed gables, stands and gate gates . The gate posts are often decorated with tendrils, grapes or birds. The beams above the Deelentor are often provided with biblical sayings or with dedications. Since 1790, the "trumpet angels" have appeared at the Deelentoren in the Ravensberger Land: naked angelic figures with a tuba , trumpet or horn in hand. In addition, scepter, crown, key and other symbols are often depicted next to the rather graceful-looking angel figures. They are an indication of the Christian belief of the builders of the homesteads. The Hiddenhauser angel representations date from the time between 1842 and 1920. Today only ten of these “angel arches” are preserved and are mostly listed .

Göpelhaus

Göpelhaus at Harland farm

The Harland farm in Lippinghausen has an octagonal half-timbered building in which there was a Göpel plant . Up until the Second World War, a lathe was driven here by horses or cows walking in circles. This "machine" served as the forerunner of the electric motor to drive various devices, e.g. B. a wind sweep or the grinding of fodder meal. With the onset of electrification at the end of the 19th century, the Göpel systems became superfluous. The Göpelhaus is one of only two preserved in the Herford district and is a listed building.

Lippinghausen clock tower

Lippinghausen clock tower

Former landmark Lippinghausen was the clock tower - once ridge turret of the office building of 1905 on the 1984 demolished margarine factory H. Meyer Lippinghausen. The clock tower is the only evidence of this factory that has been preserved and preserved. The clock is made by Ed. Korfhage & Söhne, a manufacturer in Melle , and can be seen with its interesting work in front of the town hall. Today it is a landmark of the larger community.

Parks

Park Gut Hiddenhausen

A 2.5 hectare manor park belongs to Gut Hiddenhausen. In addition to the manor house and the farm buildings, the orangery was restored and the associated garden was re-created based on the baroque model. The park is an originally baroque garden, dating back to the 18th century, south of the orangery. By far the largest part is now a landscape park with many trees and an integrated family cemetery.

Park Gut Bustedt

The Biology Center at Gut Bustedt includes a 3.5 hectare park in the Brandbach valley. The gardens contain garden remains from the 19th century, but are predominantly a modern show and model garden that is used for training purposes. The original part was laid out as a kitchen garden on the partially filled house areas and decorated with pyramid trees , flower beds and gazebos around 1820. The modern show facility includes a wet meadow area and a cottage garden.

Park "Meyer-Lippinghausen"

Industrial villa

In Lippinghausen on the Milky Way a villa was built for the manufacturer Heinrich Meyer-Lippinghausen in 1926 (from 1958 to 2015 as the "Taurus House" seat of the British commander of the 1st (UK) Armored Division ). A spacious park (at that time already in the "English style") was created on a 2 hectare site. In 2016, the Federal Republic of Germany sold the property to the highest bidder. The descendants of the Meyer Lippinghausen family were able to acquire and renovate it. The monument was restored to its original state.
