The Füllenbruch nature reserve is located in Herford and Hiddenhausen , northwest of Herford city center and in the Hiddenhausen districts of Sundern and Oetinghausen . The Untere Talstraße separates the Bruch from the Herringhausen industrial park . The protected area has an area of about 138.79 hectares (of which about 21.15 hectares are in the Herford area) and has been a nature reserve since 1977.

The Füllenbruch was originally a damp moor and forest area ( Bruch = moist forest). Through centuries of cultivation, it is today an extensive meadow lowland and a typical example of a historically grown cultural landscape. From 1935 the Düsedieksbach was straightened and the meadow areas were drained in order to make better use of them. Despite the increasing use of arable land, farmers still cultivate their land here mainly as meadows or pastures.

The lowland area is a so-called "sub-erosion depression", which is typical of this region and is of particular importance for the landscape. The aim of nature conservation work in Füllenbruch is to maintain and develop a high proportion of wet meadows. Many rare plant and animal species find a suitable habitat here.

Meadows and pastures form the grassland in Füllenbruch. Meadows that are no longer fertilized and only mowed from mid-June are particularly valuable for nature conservation. Significantly more plant species grow here, such as B. meadowfoam and cuckoo's light carnation than on the more used and nutrient-rich meadows. Butterflies and grasshoppers find more food plants and places to lay their eggs. Füllbruch is looked after by the Biological Station Ravensberg eV based in Kirchlengern . The biological station works with the local farmers to use meadows and pastures in a more environmentally friendly way. For loss of income, farmers who z. B. no longer fertilize, compensation payments.

The route of the former Herford small railway between Herford and Enger runs through the length of the Füllenbruch and is now a popular hiking and cycling route. The BahnRadRoute Weser-Lippe also runs through the Füllenbruch.

In the 1950s there was a zoo with more than 50 species and over 300 animals in the south-eastern area of Füllenbruch, not far from the flyover of the bypass road over Füllenbruchstrasse. This also included a restaurant with a beer garden.
