Geographical location

The former joint community of Wellingholzhausen, today a district of the city of Melle, is located on the northern slope of the Teutoburg Forest . Wellingholzhausen is centrally located around 25 km away between the university towns of Osnabrück and Bielefeld . The Münster-Osnabrück airport is about 50 km away.

In the Wellingholzhausen area lies the 220 meter high Beutling , whose area of 42.8 hectares has been under nature protection since 1937. A lookout tower stood on the Beutling as early as 1891; the youngest was completed in 2000 and is 30 meters high.

structure

The place consists of the nine farmers handarpe, Himmern, Kerßenbrock, Nüven, Oberschlochtern, Peingdorf, Uhlenberg and Vessendorf as well as the village farmers Wellingholzhausen, which formerly formed the community of Wellingholzhausen.

history

historical development

Wellingholzhausen was once a "subtropical coastal town". Millions of years ago, dinosaurs left their stamps in the Osnabrück region (in Bad Essen- Barkhausen, from one of the smallest dinosaurs in the neighboring town of Borgholzhausen ). A new sensational find was announced in 2005. An iguanodon's footstep has been found in the northern neighboring municipality of Hilter - Borgloh . These dinosaur tracks are prehistoric legacies from when the Osnabrück area still had a subtropical climate and a shallow sea covered large areas.

The first people lived in the parish of Wellingholzhausen long before the birth of Christ. Archaeological finds testify to this. So were z. B. near the Osterbach, in today's Osterfeldsiedlung, a club of rubble (8th to 4th millennium BC), or in Handarpe an ax from the 4th millennium BC. Found. Other witnesses from the Neolithic Age (4000–1700 BC) are barrows that can be found in the Wellingholzhausen municipality. Urns from the Bronze Age (1000 BC) have also been found in Wellingholzhausen and the surrounding farmers.

The first permanent settlement occurred between 700 and 500 after the birth of Christ.

Presumably in the year 9 AD, the general Varus and his legions marched north through the Grönegau . Through the transverse valleys (Döhren) of the Teutoburg Forest and the Wiehengebirge he came on the way back west to the area of the Kalkrieser Senke, where his army was defeated by Arminius (Hermann the Cheruscan).

Van Holthuson Ekkiko thritlich muddi havoron, Tiziko an themo selvon tharpa et linem lakan, that si fiftein penningo worth. This information about the income of the Freckenhorst Monastery, written down in Old Low German, can be found in the so-called “Freckenhorster Heberolle” from 1050. In today's wording, they say that “Ekkiko from Holzhausen 30 bushels of oats and Tiziko from the same village a linen sheet, that 15 pfennigs should be worth “to deliver to the monastery. According to this, the place Wellingholzhausen would be documented 40 years before the previously assumed mention in the deed of donation of the bailiff Eberhard from the year 1090. However, the identity of the "Holthuson" mentioned in 1050, in contrast to the "Holthusun" of 1090 with the community first named "Wellincholthusen" in 1160, is not yet fully established.

The brothers Eberhard, the noble bailiff of the Osnabrück church, and Liudolf carry goods to the Osnabrück church in Icker, Borgwedde, Felsen, Venne, Schwagstorf, Darum, Borgloh and Astrup zu Lehn and donate the church to (Welling-) Holzhausen to the Iburg monastery, For this they each receive 5 pounds of tithes in wages for life, without being obliged to serve. However, Eberhard is supposed to give 2 denarii ( wax interest ) to the altar of St. Peter. At the same time an agreement is reached on the hereditary bailiwick in the family.
