history

The place name (Low German: Nyenkerken) was first mentioned in 1160. From the town of Suttorf (Low German: Suithorpe) there is documentary evidence as early as around the year 1000 that taxes had to be paid to the Corvey monastery . A daughter church of the Diocese of Osnabrück, founded in 803, is said to have stood in Ostenfelde. At the beginning of the 12th century, a church was built about three kilometers to the east. In the 16th century a chapel was built in what is now the Schiplage district (since 1972 Schiplage-St.Annen).

For a long time, the Osnabrück region stood in alternation of denominations. During the so-called “revision negotiations” on July 9, 1657, as a result of the Reformation, St. Anne's Church was assigned to the Roman Catholic and the Neuenkirchen Church to the Evangelical Lutheran denomination.

A decisive event was a devastating fire in the town center, which destroyed over 80 buildings in the village, including the church and the school, on May 18, 1883.

As part of the regional reform, the former joint municipality of Neuenkirchen with the eight districts of Holterdorf, Insingdorf, Küingdorf, Neuenkirchen, Ostenfelde, Redecke, Schiplage and Suttorf was incorporated into the urban area of ​​Melle.
