H2O (Herford)
The H2O is a sports and leisure pool in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Herford in Germany . On an area of over 3,500 square meters, including 1,400 square meters of water, there is an adventure pool , a sauna area , a wellness area and several dining facilities. With 524,000 visitors in 2013 and 561,000 guests in 2014, the H2O is one of the most popular baths in East Westphalia-Lippe .
location
The H2O is located in Neustädter Feldmark on Wiesestrasse between the Werre and the Ludwig-Jahn-Stadion . On the opposite side of Wiesestrasse is the former Kiewiese , which now serves as a parking lot for the H2O and the stadium and where funfair and circus events were held from 1958 to 2010.
history
The forerunner of the H2O was the Otto-Weddigen-Bad, opened on June 23, 1935, which was located in the same place and which was named after the Herford-born submarine commander Otto Weddigen from the First World War. For decades it was the only outdoor swimming pool in Herford and even had a 10-meter diving platform. As more and more heated outdoor pools became established, the water was heated with the help of the Werre water. After the outdoor swimming pool was no longer up to date in the 1990s and had to be renovated, it was closed on September 10, 1994. In the meantime, however, the Im Kleiner Felde outdoor pool had been opened with the neighboring ice rink, so that a contemporary outdoor pool was available again in the city. When the Herford indoor swimming pool opened in April 1966 on Hansastraße had to be renovated, it was closed in June 1997. The construction of the H2O had already started and was opened in October of the same year. It is operated by the Herford municipal utility .
Due to the great demand, the sauna area had to be expanded several times.
Surname
Before the new adventure pool opened, the city had a long discussion about the name. The old name "Otto-Weddigen-Bad", also known as "Otto" for short, was no longer an option, as it was a completely different bathroom that was just at the same location. But one did not want to do without this name entirely. The suggestion was taken up to name the bathroom “Herford's second Otto” - or H2O for short - which is also the chemical formula for water.

The leisure pool has a lap pool including a diving tower (1 meter and 3 meters) with a length of 25 meters and a water temperature of 28 ° C. There is also a wave pool with a torrent and wave channel and a heated year-round outdoor pool with a water temperature of 32 ° C and a length of 25 meters, which can also be reached via a swimming channel from the inside of the pool.
These pools are complemented by a separate baby paddling pool, a whirlpool, several water massage facilities, a children's play area and two slides. In the 146-meter-long jungle cone slide you can experience a river trip through a jungle. The Thunderbird slide , opened in November 2014, is 110 meters long. It contains curved LED screens for generating videos. You can choose between the three scenarios “crash into water”, “snow storm” and “space adventure”, which are played in film and sound during the 20-second slide.
Tabokiri jungle island
The bathroom is equipped with a jungle island called TABOKIRI. It consists of a 400 square meter "jungle", which is equipped with water slides, a diving grotto with animated fish and coral reef, an old wooden sailboat and a Mayan temple. The offer is aimed mainly at children between 5 and 11 years of age.
Sauna area
In the Nordic style sauna garden there are twelve different saunas on an area of over 5,000 square meters with temperatures from 45 to 100 ° C, which are both inside and outside the pool (sauna garden).
These are a steam bath (45 ° C), a sanarium (60 ° C), a bear sauna (60 ° C), a Vesitorni sauna (65 ° C, water tower sauna with a film panorama), a Suola Sauna (75 ° C), a terra sauna (75 to 90 ° C), a Löly sauna (80 ° C), a Vaikutus sauna (80 ° C, themed infusions), a hay sauna (85 ° C), a Luonto sauna Sauna (90 ° C), a Saari sauna (100 ° C) and a log cabin sauna (100 ° C).
The Vaikutus sauna is a so-called event sauna. It offers space for almost 100 people and is equipped with high-quality lighting and sound technology.
A snow cabin (−12 ° C) called Lumikide has been available since October 2019 to cool off.
In the quiet rooms you can relax on warm loungers (39 ° C) with meditative music. Inside there is a whirlpool and a solarium, outside there is another whirlpool and an outdoor pool.
In addition, the tent lounge is a particularly exclusive relaxation area with 14 loungers that can be booked for half or full days.
The entire sauna area is textile-free. Every Tuesday is women's sauna day.

The pool offers water fitness courses in which the joints, ligaments and tendons are relieved and the muscles and the musculoskeletal system are strengthened. The courses are designed for different target groups. There are also fasting cures and canoe tours on the Werre.

In the swimming pool, visitors to the pool can consume drinks, small snacks and salads on two levels. The special menus change regularly and offer seasonal offers.
In the sauna area there is a restaurant, a sauna bar and the living room, where food and drinks are served by an open fireplace. Italian cuisine is served at the rock counter in the sauna garden.
