The Porta-Express is a line of local rail passenger transport in the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony , the short name is RE 78 . It runs every two hours from Nienburg / Weser via Minden to Bielefeld . The Nienburg – Minden railway line (previously served by the Weser-Aller Railway ) and the Hamm – Minden railway line are used as transport routes. The state border is crossed between Leese - Stolzenau and Petershagen -Lahde.

offer

Current offer

Between Minden and Bielefeld, together with the Weser-Leine-Express and the Westfalen-Express (RE 70 or RE 6), there is a half-hourly service (with slight time differences). A morning trip starts in Rheda-Wiedenbrück. Some trips Bielefeld – Minden and back on the weekend nights also run as Porta-Express , in which case the train also stops in Brake .

In Nienburg there is a direct connection to the Regional Express from Hanover in the direction of Bremen (RE8, further to Bremerhaven-Lehe). That is why this line is often used as a connection from Ostwestfalen-Lippe in the direction of Bremen, the travel time can compete with the intercity connection via Osnabrück.

In Verden there has been a direct connection to trains to Rotenburg (Wümme) since 2011 . This enables a fast, but unattractive connection to Hamburg due to the three changes made .

On December 10, 2017, eurobahn took over operations from DB Regio. In a Europe-wide tender, it was able to secure the operation of the RE 78 line in the Teutoburg Forest network for 15 years and is using Stadler FLIRT vehicles . Since the start of operations, the RE 78 line has also been running every two hours between Bielefeld and Nienburg on weekends.

Centralbahn special train as a replacement train for Eurobahn railcars in Nienburg

Due to a lack of vehicles, the train service on the Minden - Nienburg section was replaced by buses from 11 December 2017 from Monday to Friday until 31 December 2017. After numerous outages on the section over the first two weekends, this was expanded every day of the week. From January 1, 2018 to October 8, 2018, the trains ran largely according to plan, and since then there have initially been weeks of rail replacement services. The Eurobahn then commissioned Centralbahn AG , which will probably provide traffic on the Minden – Nienburg section with class 110 locomotives and former express train compartment cars until mid-December . A change is necessary in Minden.

Former offer

Line RE 78 did not run on weekends and public holidays until the timetable change in winter 2017. The service was then taken over by the line RB 76 Weser-Aller-Bahn , which ran every two hours between Minden and Rotenburg. At the end points there were direct connections to Bielefeld and Hamburg, so that the connection could be managed with two transfers. This weekend connection also existed on weekdays for years and was particularly popular with passengers with weekend tickets or Lower Saxony tickets . With the timetable change in December 2007, the continuous regional train line was shortened during the week to the Verden – Rotenburg section and the RE 78 with the Bielefeld – Nienburg train route was introduced instead.

The Weser-Aller-Bahn is operated by the DB Regio Nord, which provided all trains between Rotenburg and Minden until the line was split up on working days. Before the half-hourly service from Bielefeld - Minden was introduced (additional service by RE 6), the RB Rotenburg - Minden - Bielefeld ran every two hours with a connection to / from Hamburg. At that time, partially converted double-deck cars of the former Deutsche Reichsbahn were used. The continuously electrified route was then operated by diesel railcars.

Reactivated in May 2000: Petershagen-Lahde stop

With the introduction of the line in 2007, diesel multiple units of the 644 series were initially used, which had served the Bielefeld - Minden shuttle service in previous years. In 2009 they were replaced by series 425 and 426 electric multiple units, and occasionally supplemented by double-decker trains in the evenings. Due to a lack of vehicles for the 425 and 426, from February 2017 until the end of the DB Regio's contract on December 9, 2017, all trains were made up of class 111 electric locomotives with initially three and later two double-decker cars from the 1994 series .

Naming

The name Porta-Express can be traced back to the Porta-Westfalica breakthrough in the Weser halfway through .

Tariff

Between Bielefeld and Petershagen-Lahde, the "Westfalentarif" tariff of the Verkehrsverbund Ostwestfalen-Lippe (VVOWL) applies . The Lower Saxony ticket can be used from Nienburg to Herford .
