Swell:

The Nienburg – Minden line is a branch line in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia . It connects the Nienburg station on the Wunstorf – Bremen line with the Minden station on the Hamm – Minden line . The most important task of the route is the freight traffic from the Maschen marshalling yard near Hamburg to the Ruhr area and on to southern Germany as well as the container traffic from the seaports to the hinterland. It bears the name Natobahn because of its former military importance.

history

The route was still served with all stops in the timetable from 1944.

The route is part of a direct connection between Hamburg and the Ruhr area , which relieves the traffic via Bremen, Osnabrück and Münster as an alternative route , especially in freight traffic. Transports between Hamburg and Hanover are also partly carried through them. In order to create sufficient capacity for diverted long-distance and freight trains, the regional railways are sometimes switched to rail replacement services .

Weekend traffic was only reintroduced in 2001. Since then, the RB 76 Minden- Rotenburg an der Wümme , which operates here, has been used in particular by travelers with the weekend ticket , as this connection resulted in the shortest travel times between the Ruhr area and Hamburg in local transport. Class 110 locomotives with n-wagons were mainly used on the RB 76 line. Diesel multiple units of the 614 series were also used during the week.

Triggered by the cut in regionalization funds, consideration was given to giving up local rail passenger transport here from December 2007. The investments made a few years ago for the recommissioning and the extensive expansion of the Petershagen-Lahde station would then be superfluous. The suspension of local transport could be averted. Due to the very low demand in through traffic, the continuous line between Minden and Rotenburg was abandoned Monday to Friday. Since then, the route has been served by the RE 78 Nienburg – Bielefeld line.

With the introduction of the line in 2007, diesel multiple units of the 644 series were initially used, which had served the Bielefeld – Minden shuttle service in previous years. In 2009 they were replaced by series 425 and 426 electric multiple units, and occasionally supplemented by double-decker trains in the evenings. Due to a lack of vehicles on the 426, all trains from February 2017 until the timetable change were made up of class 111 electric locomotives with two double-decker cars from the 1994 series.

The service took place at the weekend every two hours (offset by about an hour compared to the weekday operation) by the RB 76 Minden-Rotenburg line. This was previously operated by DB Regio Nord with locomotive-hauled trains. Class 141 , 111 or 143 locomotives with double-decker cars or n-cars were used. Since the end of 2014, EVB has been driving diesel multiple units of the 628 series in double traction ( train numbers up to 14141) on behalf of DB Regio Nord . The other train running on the route was formed by the DB Regio as from Monday to Friday (train numbers from 14183). The connections in Minden to RE 6 to Cologne / Bonn Airport and in Rotenburg to RE 4 of the Metronom to Hamburg were important.

business

There is no scheduled long- distance passenger rail transport on the route.

Local transport

DB 426 025 as RE78 Nienburg (Weser) -> Bielefeld in Nienburg (Weser) station
evb diesel multiple unit 151 as RB76 Minden (Westphalia) -> Rotenburg (Wümme) in Nienburg (Weser) station
Eurobahn ET 4.07 as RE78 Nienburg (Weser) -> Bielefeld Hbf in Nienburg (Weser) station

In rail transport the route has been used for the timetable change 2017/18 daily in two-hour intervals by line RE 78 Nienburg-Bielefeld operated. Previously this only ran on weekdays, while the Minden – Nienburg – Verden – Rotenburg (Wümme) route was served on the weekend . Stadler Flirt railcars from EVU eurobahn are used as rolling stock, with four-part railcars (class 428) being used as planned. The vehicles that have been in use since mid-January originally belonged to the Westfalenbahn and were still painted in March 2018. The first train runs on weekdays in the direction of Bielefeld at 7:09 a.m. from Nienburg and in the opposite direction at 5:24 a.m. from Bielefeld. The last pair of trains leaves Nienburg at 9:09 p.m. and Bielefeld at 7:24 p.m., each new since the Eurobahn took over. The train at 8:01 a.m. from Minden starts in Rheda-Wiedenbrück at 7:04 a.m., except on Sundays. In Nienburg there is a direct connection to the regional express line RE8 from / to Bremerhaven-Lehe via Bremen, some of which in Verden have short connections from / to Rotenburg. There are some additional trains on the RE 78 line at night, but they only run on the Minden - Bielefeld section.

The average speed in the Minden – Nienburg section is 66 km / h, the maximum speed 80 km / h.

Tariff

In principle, the Lower Saxony tariff is used. From August 1, 2016, there was a special ticket for this route for one year, which cost 6 euros. The Westphalian tariff applies to journeys between Petershagen-Lahde and Minden .

Freight transport

Freight trains run on the route, u. a. to the Heyden power plant in Petershagen-Lahde . Train crossings on the otherwise single-track route are only possible in Windheim, Leese-Stolzenau and in the south of Nienburg.

Operational peculiarities

The route is still interesting from an operational and railway technical point of view in 2013 because it is equipped with mechanical safety technology including form signals . A number of railway stations and abandoned stops that have been closed for passenger traffic can still be recognized by the abandoned platform edges, characteristic reception buildings with historical addresses and old goods loading facilities. The unrestricted level crossings are still secured today via warning whistles, which are arranged by whistle boards.

future

The double-track expansion of the Rotenburg – Verden (Aller) and Nienburg (Weser) –Minden lines is part of the target network that has been defined in connection with the Y-route Hamburg / Bremen – Hanover . The line is an urgent requirement in the law on the expansion of railways . According to the BVWP, the investment volume of the 77 km long overall project to Verden-Rotenburg and a design speed of 120 km / h is 348 million euros.

In the “Schiene Nord” dialogue forum (from 2015), Alpha Variant E came out, so the Y-route will not be implemented, but the Nienburg – Minden route will be slightly expanded, and the Rotenburg – Verden route to the north will be expanded to double-track.
