geography

Uffeln is the only area in the Herford district east of the Weser and therefore geographically does not belong to the Ravensberger Land . Much of the area consists of the up to 170 m high Buhn ridge . This hill slopes steeply on its southeastern part. Its name is synonymous with raised area (see the word stage ). At the same time, it protrudes like a groyne into the Weser, which encircles the Uffeln in a large arc and forms the natural district boundary in the west, south and east. Buhn is also the name of a location .

history

Uflen was first mentioned in 1258 in connection with the founding of the Segenstal monastery in Vlotho. The name is composed of two terms, the syllable len stands for the so-called Lohwald. The first part Uf could be interpreted as an Old Saxon word for swamp or the like ( Hans Bahlow ). In the Ravensberger Urbar of 1556, the location of one of the Uffelner Urhöfe (No. 3) is referred to as being in Brueche , i.e. lying in the break .

On July 15, 1858, Uffeln was separated from the municipality of Holtrup as an independent municipality and on January 1, 1973 it was incorporated into the city of Vlotho. Until then, Uffeln was part of the Minden district .

During excavations in 1933 by Friedrich Langewiesche several were mounds explored in the Buhn whose emergence at the time of the transition of the stone to the Bronze Age was dated and the Bronze Age itself. Although no direct traces of settlement have been discovered so far, they can still be taken as an indication of the presence of ancient people.

A gravel pond was created in the west of Uffeln through extensive funding from Weserkies in the 1930s. The gravel was considered of high quality and was used in the construction of the forerunner of today's Federal Motorway 2 and the Herford barracks .

Until the beginning of the 20th century, Uffeln was predominantly characterized by agriculture . People were more likely to find work in the town of Vlotho on the opposite left bank of the Weser. They were able to reach their jobs by ferry until 1937 and from 1945 to 1951. It goes back to an old ferry connection, possibly already in existence in the 15th century, which was operated from the "Fährhof" on the Vlotho side. Vehicles could also be transferred. A small human-only connection of this type was a little further downstream.

In 1928 the first road bridge over the Weser between Uffeln and Vlotho was inaugurated. It was blown up in 1945 by German pioneers in order to make the crossing of the Weser more difficult for the advancing American forces . However, they used the road on the left side of the Weser to continue their march towards Rinteln . In 1951 a new road bridge for crossing the Weser was put into operation, which was replaced by a modern new building in 1982 in order to cope with the increased volume of traffic.

In conjunction with the Vlothoer Weserhafen and thus the Weser shipping , two shipyards were operated in the Uffeln area . In 1879 Friedrich Rasche founded a shipyard for barges . In 1987 the founding company had to be closed; the branch in Lohnde on the Mittelland Canal was operated until 1996. A second shipbuilding company established itself in 1906: the Büsching & Rosemeier shipyard. Barges were also built here, such as the monastery sands of the Elmshorn mill company Kölln , which are still on display . The Moby Dick , designed by Büsching & Rosemeier in 1972 and completed in terms of interior fittings and equipment, is still a tourist attraction in excursion traffic on Berlin's inland waters. The shipyard was closed in 1984.

Population development

On December 31, 2018, the Uffeln district had 3591 inhabitants. This is a decrease of 1.1 percent compared to October 1, 2017. At that time, 51.0 percent of the 3,631 inhabitants were women, 59.2 percent Protestant, 7.4 percent Catholic and 6.5 percent foreigners.

religion

The Evangelical Lutheran parish in Uffeln became independent in 2007. Before that, Uffeln belonged to the parish of the Evangelical Church in Holtrup . Since 1972 Uffeln has been a separate parish in this community.

The cemetery chapel from 1959, which was used for church services as a peace church until the end of 2012, is owned by the city of Vlotho. As of December 31, 2012, the lease was terminated for cost reasons. As a temporary solution, the parish used rooms in Uffeln on Mindener Strasse for their services. Since April 20, 2014, an Easter Sunday, they have been taking place in the new Zacchaeus community center , to which the previous community center has been expanded, in Uffeln.

The Borlefzener Kirchweg , which runs from Borlefzen to Holtrup, mostly straight as a dead line on the groyne, reminds of the time when Uffeln was part of the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Holtrup (today part of Porta Westfalica).

politics

The administration of the city of Vlotho and the city council are politically responsible for Uffeln. Uffeln's mayor is Rainer Hoffmann ( SPD ).
