With around 2,700 inhabitants, Lohnde is the third largest of eleven districts of Seelze in the Hanover , Lower Saxony region .

geography

Lohnde is located near the Lower Saxony state capital Hanover between Seelze and Gümmer on the federal highway 441 in a triangle of Mittelland Canal, Leine and Bahn. Lohnde is part of the Calenberger Land between Deister and Leine .

history

The origin of the place name has not yet been conclusively clarified. Both the old German Loh for forest and Lohne for watercourse can be used as derivation options. It is also certain that a medieval noble family de Lon / von Lona lived in Lohnde. A document from the year 1211, which was only rediscovered in 2011, attests to a sale of land, which also affected a farm in "Lonae". Before that, the first written mention of the village of Lohnde was assumed to be 1242. It was a deed of gift in which a farm was also mentioned. However, several prehistoric finds point to a much earlier human settlement in the area.

An atonement cross for the knight and Harburg bailiff Dietrich von Mandelsloh , who was stabbed to death by Duke Heinrich I in the Sate War in 1396 , is located in Lohnde. Dietrich had previously become known together with his brothers in the Mandelsloh feud .

Around the year 1600 Lohnde grew to 25 farms. In 1689 the village had 192 inhabitants. Lohnde hardly changed in the 18th century. Only with the onset of industrialization, the increasing rail freight traffic and thus the construction of the Seelze marshalling yard in 1909, the population of Lohndes rose to around 700 by 1925. The second large population surge followed after the Second World War . Due to the influx of displaced persons and refugees, the thousand mark was soon reached and in around 1965 the mark of 2000 inhabitants was exceeded.

As a previously independent municipality, Lohnde was incorporated into the greater municipality of Seelze on March 1, 1974 (from March 1, 1977 the town of Seelze).
