Almhorst is a village and southern district of the city of Seelze in Lower Saxony .

geography

Almhorst lies in the middle of the Calenberger Land on the L 390. Neighboring towns are Lohnde and the core town of Seelzes in the north, Döteberg in the east, Kirchwehren and Lathwehren in the south, Dedensen in the east and the Holtensen district of Barsinghausen .

history

Almhorst, previously also Elmenhorst or -hurst later Allmen Horst , presumably called "spot on elm forest". The expansion of the elm vegetation , especially in the nearby Lohnder Holz, could have extended to Almhorst in the Middle Ages or even enclosed it.

Almhorst was first mentioned in a document in 1282. An even earlier mention only indicates the approximate period 1120–1140 for a donation. Around 1600 Almhorst consisted of 23 farms, by the 19th century the population rose to 250. If Almhorst was previously a purely farming village, it gradually changed. Industrialization, the opening of the railway line and the chemical factory in nearby Seelze had a decisive influence. After the Second World War , the number of inhabitants fluctuated due to refugee admissions.

On March 1, 1974, Almhorst became one of the eleven localities of the greater community of Seelze. On March 1, 1977, Seelze was elevated to the status of town and thus Almhorst to a district.

coat of arms

The draft emblem of Almhorst comes from the in Gadenstedt born and later in Hannover living heraldic and graphic artist Alfred Brecht , who is also the emblem of Bantorf , Barrigsen , Egestorf has designed and many other villages in the district of Hannover. The approval of the coat of arms was granted on June 9, 1971 by the district president in Hanover.

Almhorst coat of arms
Blazon : " Green  : Gold share , above silver steering log with gold fittings, down a two-bladed, green hops vine with two clusters."
Justification of the coat of arms: The noble family "von Almenhurst", named after the place, did not leave a family coat of arms, so that a new coat of arms could be designed without any influence. The first appearance of the place - before the time of the coat of arms - was decisive, a purely rural symbol, the steering log, to be included in the upper part of the coat of arms. In the lower part of the coat of arms, the hops cultivation attested here is symbolized as a special agricultural feature by a two-leaf, green hop tendril with two umbels. The field name "Hopfenbruch" has also been used since the 16th century.
