Life

After training as an administrative employee and businessman in Braunschweig , he moved to Hamburg . In 1934 he became the head of a business school in Breslau . During this time he also met his future wife. The marriage had four children.

The family moved to Berlin, where Brecht worked for the cigarette company Haus Bergmann before he was drafted into military service (1940–1945).

From 1946 Brecht worked as a graphic artist and heraldist. After a stay in Lehrte, he moved to Hanover, where he met his second wife. From 1961 until his death in 1983 he took over the management and chairmanship of the heraldic association "Zum Kleeblatt" . His activities included the publication and editing of the "Heraldische Schriften" (1960–1979, 1981–1983) and the management of the Lower Saxony coat of arms (1971–1977).

Works

Brecht's works include 250 family and municipal coats of arms as well as 1,500 pen drawings, etchings, watercolors and oil paintings of farms, manor houses, churches, monasteries and mills in the greater Hanover area.

In his work, Brecht paid particular attention to depicting trees. This interest is also reflected in the works he left behind.

His main field of work was later heraldry. To this end, he first dealt with the history of the commissioning locations and families before he designed a matching coat of arms in his workshop.
