With about 1600 inhabitants, Leveste is the second largest district of the city of Gehrden in the Hanover region after the core city .
history
In Calenberger Land Leveste is one of the oldest settlements. It was on Hellweg .
The name of the place is passed down from the years 1225 as Leueste and 1229 as Leuesthe . In this year, a priest from Leveste is also mentioned, which is why the St. Agatha Church is the oldest preserved building in the place.
There were two castles near Leveste. The Loh pond between Leveste and Langreder is reminiscent of those from Loh . There was a moated castle on Levester Bach , which was awarded to the Knights Kniegen as a fief by Duke Magnus II in 1370 and has remained in the possession of the Barons Knigge since then . The water tower was however in 1425 after an agreement of Bernard I with the advice of the city Hannover demolished because the citizens were afraid the nearby meeting war-ready knights. A moated castle was built in place of the castle, from 1728 to 1732 the baroque Levester mansion was originally a three-wing complex.
The Leveste volunteer fire brigade was founded in the spring of 1913 and initially consisted of 34 men and has been providing fire protection and general assistance ever since. Furthermore, a music train was founded in 1921 and a youth fire brigade in 1966 . Since 2006, the Leveste fire brigade has joined forces in a fire fighting district with the Lemmie and Redderse volunteer fire brigades from the city.
On August 1, 1971 Leveste was incorporated into the city of Gehrden.
tram
At the end of the 19th century, Tramway Hannover AG (from 1921: Üstra ) opened tramway line 10, which in 1898 initially ran from Hanover via Empelde , Benthe to Gehrden ; the following year the line was extended via Leveste, Langreder , Egestorf to Barsinghausen . Electric power came with the tram - it wasn't until 1914 that all towns in the Hanover district were supplied with electricity. Until November 1953 the tram was also used to transport goods (potatoes / grain / beets / stones / coal). Passenger transport had already been transferred to the O10 bus line the year before.

coat of arms
The design of the coat of arms of Leveste comes from the heraldist and graphic artist Alfred Brecht , who was born in Gadenstedt and later lived in Hanover , and who has already designed the coat of arms of Bantorf , Barrigsen , Egestorf and many other localities in the Hanover district. The approval of the coat of arms was granted on May 30, 1960 by the district president in Hanover.
Blazon : " Split shield , in fronta silver kettle hook in red , behind in silver over two red bars a growing , blue-tongued and armored , red lion ." | |
Foundation of the coat of arms: Leveste has been able to retain the character of a farming village, so that the heraldist preferred symbols from the farming world. When Andreas Freiherr Knigge agreed that the family coat of arms of the centenary court lords in Leveste could meaningfully enrich the local coat of arms, the coat of arms described above was created, which the council of the municipality of Leveste decided to adopt at its meeting on March 2, 1960. The colors red and white / silver take up the Lower Saxony state colors. |
Culture and sights
Buildings
- The St. Agatha's Church from 1229 in 2004 was 775 years old. It is built in the transition style of the first half of the 13th century. The Gothic frescoes in the choir and the organ vault date from the 15th century, while the Gothic frescoes in the nave are dated from 1370 to 1430. The frescoes are largely preserved in their original state. Anyone who stood in the church in the Middle Ages and looked up into the vault saw the exemplary people of the church there. From this the German term "die up there" developed. Later the frescoes were painted over with white paint. Thanks to this overpainting, the frescoes are true to the original. In 1924 the overpainted frescoes were discovered and uncovered. Today the frescoes are of great importance to scientists, film directors, actors and costume designers because they faithfully reproduce the fashion of the time around 1400.
- On the western edge of the village is the manor and the manor house of the Barons Knigge , which was built from 1728 to 1732. It is surrounded by mature trees and an extensive park. The manor house is inhabited by the current owner Hubertus Freiherr Knigge (* 1966) and his family and is not open to the public. The design of the gate to the once planned access road is said to have been made by the royal Hanoverian master builder Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves .
- The Magnus monument on the road from Leveste to Gehrden. It commemorates Duke Magnus Torquatus, who fell there in 1373 . A rectangular stone block was set up as a cross stone at the place of death . King George V of Hanover had a sandstone monument built in the Gothic style with this as a central piece in 1864 .
