The footpath at the Arpker village pond

In the middle of the old village is a village pond that was created during the Ice Age . In the course of the road construction from Sievershausen to Immensen at the beginning of the 20th century, around a third of the pond was filled with earth. Since the construction of the bypass road, this part of the old village road has been a footpath with seating (see picture). Kingfisher and gray heron can be seen at the pond, bats fly at night , and long-eared owls have a breeding site in the village.

In 1978 a nest for storks was built on the roof of the ev.-luth. Church of the Holy Cross built. A pair brooded there for the first time in 1993, and the eyrie has been occupied every year since 2000. In 2007 all three young died, in 2008 two out of four, in 2009 one out of four. This is due to climatic conditions and the food situation.

history

So far, Arpke was mentioned for the first time in the document from 1250, but was already on record in 1166 (according to the private archive of E. Strelow, Arpke). Within the series of Monumenta Germaniae Historica Scriptores T16 is a document in which it says that in 1166, among other things, “Unum mansum in Arebeke per judicium aquae frigidae recuperamus”. Translated: "Through the dish of cold water" we acquire a hoof back in Arebeke. Since the legal situation was not clear in this case, there was a court hearing over the taxes and hooves in Arpke. The beneficiary of this decision was the monastery in Steterburg (west of Wolfenbüttel ).

The battle of Sievershausen took place between Arpke and Sievershausen in 1553 . This was one of the bloodiest battles in what is now Lower Saxony, with around 30,000 participants. About 4,000 men died in the process and were buried in a depression, the Heldekuhle , near Arpke.

The Peiner Heerstrasse , which connected Hanover with Braunschweig and continued on to Berlin , passed Arpke . As early as 1616, the Arpker relay station was mentioned in the Meinersen's inheritance register and stock book . In addition to goods, rulers also passed this important transport link, for example Frederick the Great on June 18, 1763 on the way to Potsdam . Ten days later, his entourage followed. The latter required 65 riding and carriage horses, so that in addition to the 20 own relay horses, tension services were also requested from the village . After more than 300 years, the relay ceased operations in 1925. Today a memorial stone in Schmiedestrasse commemorates the relay.

The establishment of a school in Arpke cannot be dated more precisely. A donation and the construction of the first school building are documented for 1640. Church tasks were also associated with the school, such as the closing service for the chapel since 1666 and the bell service since 1682. Sometimes the teacher was entrusted with church services and funerals. In 1777 the schoolhouse with the teacher's apartment (living room, three chambers, cellar, cow and two pig stalls) was rebuilt at the same location near today's church. In 1895 the school board decided to build a new school building with two rooms in the north of the village, as the number of students had risen sharply and the school building had become too small. Schoolmaster and organist Franz Wrede, who had been teaching in Arpke since 1864, died on March 11, 1900 while playing the organ on Sundays. As early as 1921, the school had to be expanded to four classes, which were initially taught in the two classrooms. In 1962, the Im Hainhoop primary school, which is used today, was built. In 1958 the German best fights of the clubs without a winter bath in water polo took place in the Arpker Waldbad .

For the regional reform in Lower Saxony , Arpke was incorporated into the city of Lehrte on March 1, 1974.

coat of arms

The Arpke municipal coat of arms was designed by the heraldist and graphic artist Alfred Brecht , who designed all the coats of arms in the Hanover region. The approval of the coat of arms was granted on November 17, 1955 by the Lower Saxony Minister of the Interior .

Arpke coat of arms
Blazon : "On a silver shield a blue wavy bar and above it a red - armed , black eagle ."
Justification of the coat of arms: Looking back on the history of the village of Arpke, whose name is derived from "aar - beeke" = Adlerbach, which has not been researched up to the last phases, the obligation to the past was decisive for the choice of the coat of arms. The speaking symbols: "Eagle" and "Bach" are supposed to be the happy connection between the past and the present for the community and especially for the future.

Culture and sights

  • The church "Zum Heiligen Kreuz", located near the village pond, was built from 1857 to 1859 according to a design by the Hanoverian master builder Conrad Wilhelm Hase in neo-Gothic style as the successor to a centuries-old chapel. In 1964 it had to be extensively renovated due to woodworm infestation and other damage. In this context, the entire building was cleared of neo-Gothic style elements under the direction of the Hildesheim architect August Albert Steinborn in accordance with the contemporary taste. On January 1, 1969, the parish - until then part of the St. Martins parish Sievershausen - became independent. The old cemetery , located a little south of the church building, belongs to the community and has not been re-occupied for several decades.
  • The Apostle Church was built by the congregation in 1883 on the property at Hauptstrasse 34. Starting in 1876, it had split off from the regional church in a slow process.

It was built in 1921 to commemorate the 31 fallen in the First World War , and around 1960 two wings were added to accommodate around 150 other names of those killed in the Second World War .
  • In Schmiedestrasse on the northern edge of the road there is a boulder that is reminiscent of the former Krug (inn) .
  • As part of the village beautification, a new memorial stone was inaugurated on May 20, 2006 for the 30th Altdorf Festival between the village pond and the newly created pond boulevard. The reddish granite stone is provided with the Arpker coat of arms and the two dates 1166–2006. For the 850th birthday of the village of Arpke in May 2016, the new year numbers were added to the memorial stone.
  • To the north of the village, a reconstruction of a stable house from the Iron Age was built at the Grafhorn Naturefriends House . Erected in 2015, it was inaugurated in August 2016 and serves as an open-air museum .
