Velber is a village and the southernmost district of the city of Seelze in Lower Saxony and is located in close proximity to Hanover .
Neighboring towns are Harenberg in the north, the districts of Ahlem and Davenstedt in the east and Badenstedt in the south (all three of which belong to Hanover). In the west, Velber borders the place Lenthe (zu Gehrden ). The traffic connection is mainly via the county road K251. In the immediate vicinity there are also Seelze- Letter , Empelde and Benthe with the Benther Berg ( belonging to Ronnenberg ).
history
The meaning of the place name is traced back to "near a swampy forest". It was first mentioned in a document for the first time in 1257. During this time, the noble lords of Velber were decisive for the place.
On March 1, 1974, Velber became one of the eleven localities of the large community of Seelze. On March 1, 1977, Seelze was raised to the status of a city and Velber to a district.
The multi-purpose hall built in 1990, which burned down due to arson in 2005, could be rebuilt by the beginning of March 2007.
politics
Erhard Klein (SPD) has been the local mayor since November 2011.
coat of arms
On the red coat of arms on a green mountain covered with a silver wheel cross, there is a silver fountain under a thatched roof with a bucket hanging underneath.
Culture and sights
In the center of the village are the chapel, today's parish hall, the Kollrothsche Hof and the historic fire station.
- The chapel dates from the 13th century and was largely redesigned in the 19th century. Together with the former school building, the chapel stands on a plot of land opposite the Kollroth courtyard.
- The school building from 1662 was demolished at the beginning of the 20th century and replaced by an almost identical one. In 1963 the school was closed as part of the Lower Saxony school reform. Today it is home to the parish hall, where various events take place. For example, the Velber Culture Forum organizes concerts there at regular intervals.
- Below the protected Kollroth courtyard, the "von-Lenthe-Allee" leads out to Gehrden- Lenthe. The avenue was created to connect the manors that still existed in Velber and Lenthe at that time. It was a baptism gift to a daughter of the Kollroth estate and is still privately owned today. You can recognize it from afar thanks to its tall poplars and oaks.
- The volunteer fire department has in place of the fire station received a building with garages and living rooms in the center in the lower village (southern part Velbers), behind the rebuilt multipurpose hall and thus replaced one set up as a vehicle depot private garage in Oberdorf.
- The Velbers sports club was founded in 1950 and offers many sports, including football, badminton, table tennis and gymnastics.
Economy and Infrastructure
From three stops (Hasselfeldstraße, am Wehrgraben & Bornstraße), two bus lines of the Greater Hanover Transport (GVH) offer travel options to other parts of the city of Seelz as well as to neighboring places.
