geography

Groß Munzel is located in the center of the towns of Barsinghausen , Wunstorf , Garbsen , Bad Nenndorf and Hanover north of the Deister. It is the lowest point in the Barsinghausen urban area, the highest point of which is 363 m in the Deister . At the sports field, the Möseke flows into the Südaue flowing through the village .

history

Groß Munzel is first mentioned in the archives of the Corvey monastery around 960 as Munuslo (= Munzel). The Isenburg was located to the west of the village .

In the 18th century dragoons of the Dragoon Regiment Prinz von Wallis were stationed in Groß Munzel . The street name Spielburg still refers to the leisure activities carried out there. In Westerhagen there was a dragoons riding arena.

In the 1830s, the first paint production by Carl Hornemann (born March 29, 1811 in Hanover) was established in an old farmhouse and thus the origin of today's Pelikan AG . Hornemann got the distilled water required for the production of the colors from the neighboring grain distillery. The founding date of the company, April 28, 1838, goes back to a price sheet of that day. In 1842 Hornemann acquired a one acre plot of land (2500 m²) with buildings on Engelbosteler Damm in Hanover for 2400 thalers.

On March 1, 1974, Groß Munzel was incorporated into the town of Barsinghausen.

The St. Michaelis Church was rebuilt between 1801 and 1804 after it burned down completely in a village fire in 1787. The church tower, on the other hand, was not restored until 1821. In 1878 a Furtwängler organ was installed and extensively restored in 1998. In addition to Groß Munzel, the parish includes the villages of Ostermunzel, Barrigsen and Holtensen.

The Catholic St. Matthias Church was built in 1951. In 1999 it was profaned , and today the nearest Catholic church is 10 km away in Barsinghausen .

coat of arms

The design of the coat of arms of Groß Munzel comes from the heraldist and graphic artist Alfred Brecht , born in Gadenstedt and later living in Hanover , who has already designed the coats of arms of Aligse , Bantorf , Barrigsen and many other places in the Hanover district. The approval of the coat of arms was granted on June 30, 1958 by the Lower Saxony Minister of the Interior.

Great Munzel coat of arms
Blazon : Shield half split and divided . Above in red and silver a rafter eachin mixed colors, below in gold a black urn . "
Justification for the coat of arms: The two rafters in confused colors reflect the first letter "M" of the place name. The clay pot from the Germanic times indicates the old age of the place. Similar urns have been found in the district of Groß Munzel. The rafters can be found as a reference to the coat of arms of the neighboring town of Ostermunzel .

Culture and sights

From May to July every year, the summer organ concerts take place in the St. Michaelis Church .
