General

The history of Barsinghausen Monastery is also the history of Barsinghausen. The monastery was founded in 1180. In the Thirty Years War there was great destruction in Barsinghausen.

monastery The monastery was first mentioned in a document in 1193. It was founded by Count Wedekind von Schwalenberg a few years earlier as a double monastery, but from 1229 the chronicle only lists nuns. It is the oldest of the five women's convents located in the former Principality of Calenberg. Memorial stone The Ernst Brauns monument stands on a forest path in the extension of Barsinghäuser Deisterstraße about 1 km from its end. In contrast to the sculptures in Deisterstraße, which point the way to the open-air stage, and the memorial stone of the Bergmannsverein at the upper end of Deisterstraße, the sandstone monument erected in 1892 in memory of Ernst Brauns, the founder of the Hanover Tourist Association, is actually a listed building.
