history

The mansion in 1912

The estate is located north of the B 65 at the foot of the Stemmer Berg . In the Middle Ages, the Hellweg before Santforde , a trade route that connected Hildesheim and Braunschweig with the cities of Westphalia , ran along the route of the federal road . In 1258, the Mariensee monastery acquired a farm in the village of Stemmen . Landdrost Arndt von Wobersnow acquired this farm and another farm in 1619 and united them. Duke Friedrich Ulrich granted the newly created court the privileges of a manor . It held the patrimonial right over the school and the church. The farmers of the village belonged manorial not for good. In 1671, the von Reden family acquired the estate and kept it until 1795. The von Rössing, as Curt Hildebrand Freiherr von Rössing, the daughter of the previous owner and royal Prussian state economist Friedrich von Kaufmann (1822–1895), came into possession of the estate. Since 1877, the Baron von Rössing managed the estate.

In 1838 King Ernst August I of Hanover wanted to acquire the manor. Because the purchase price was too high, he refrained from buying it in 1843. In the 1850s there were renewed purchase intentions by a Hanoverian king. Georg V initially chose the manor as a place to build a summer residence, the owner of which refused to sell.

description

Side wing of the manor house

The Stemmen manor has a representative manor house , which is believed to have been built as a half-timbered house around 1560. The arbor as the front of the building is dated to 1672. The original half-timbered structure of the two-story building was replaced by sandstone blocks in 1875. The spacious estate is surrounded by a sandstone wall and consists of residential and farm buildings as well as gardens and park-like areas. An archway in the manor house, through which the rectangular farm yard can be reached, provides access to the estate. The three-winged mansion complex consists of residential wings on the south and west side and a farm building on the east side. To the north are further farm buildings and areas of the estate, including stables, barns and the former mill. To the south of the manor house, some buildings outside the enclosure wall belong to the estate. These include the former sheepfold, a barn, the former forester's house and a farm workers' house. These buildings date from the 19th century.

Farm buildings

In 1963 and 1999 extensive renovation work was carried out on the estate. Today it is under monument and ensemble protection . It is used as an agricultural business and is partly privately inhabited. There are guided tours of the estate and festive events are held, including a potato and wine festival. It commemorates Elias Friedrich Schmersahl , who was parish pastor in Stemmen from 1746 to 1755, and who made potatoes a popular dish in the area.
