Elias Friedrich Schmersahl (born April 2, 1719 in Dannenberg (Elbe) , † April 16, 1775 in Celle ) was a German Lutheran theologian , preacher and literary historian .

Life

Elias Friedrich Schmersahl came from a family known for generations mostly through music. His great-great-grandfather worked as a bandmaster and harpist at the court of the King of Denmark. His son Christian Schmersahl worked as an organist in Rostock. Schmersahl's grandfather Balthasar Friedrich Schmersahl had studied law, but then worked as a cantor and organist in Dannenberg. Schmersahl's father August Johann Schmersahl or Schmersahlen had studied theology and then also worked as Dannenberg cantor and organist. He married Maria Christina or Maria Christine, daughter of the mayor of Dannenberg, Heinrich Elias Stockmann. As their only son and firstborn among his siblings, Elias Friedrich Schmersahl was born on April 2, 1719 in Dannenberg.

Schmersahl's parents died early, his father in 1723, his mother in 172. He attended schools in Dannenberg and Lüneburg . From 1737 he studied philosophy and theology at the University of Jena , was a student of Johann Georg Walch and received his master's degree in 1739 by defending his dissertation on apostolic greetings. In the next year he continued his studies at the University of Göttingen , where he received his master's degree . In the same year he passed the theological exam in Hanover and was accepted there in 1741 among the candidates for the ministry .

Schmersahl then worked as a private tutor in various places until he was employed as a field preacher in 1744 by the Hanoverian troops marching on the Rhine at the time .

From 1746 to 1755 Schmersahl worked as a pastor in Stemmen in Kurhannover .

In 1755 he was appointed garrison preacher in Celle . He carried out this activity until the end of his life on April 16, 1775.
