Arnum is a district of Hemmingen in the Hanover region in Lower Saxony .
geography
The Arnum district is located on Bundesstrasse 3 , which follows the route of the former trade route from Hamburg to Basel .
history
The place is mentioned for the first time in 990 as Ernun . In line with gravel Arnum were hand axes and swords from the Paleolithic discovered so assumed that 13,000 years ago hunters on the gravel islands in the far branched line running lived.
The fortified chapel, which is still preserved today, was built around 1400. In the 19th century Arnum got its own cemetery through the work of the Arnum teacher.
After the development of the village of Arnum, which had evolved over time, planned development began in 1956. From 1956 to 1963, 100 residential units were built west of the federal road in the Bultfeld / Bergfeld area. Around 420 more followed by 1966. In Arnum Mitte, the so-called “composer's quarter” was built with a large number of single, terraced and multi-family houses. The Reichsbund built single and terraced houses as well as condominiums on Harkenblecker Weg . On the Pattenser Feldweg, the city of Hemmingen opened up single and terraced house plots for young families.
In 1965 the development in the area south of the Landwehr (Sieksfeld) followed and continued on the Pattenser Feldweg. On the northern edge, the municipality of Arnum developed a commercial and industrial area. In 1992 a living area was created between Hohen Eschenweg and Hiddestorfer Straße. Housing estates also emerged east of Bundesstraße 3.
A shopping and service center was built on Wilkenburger Strasse in the area of the historic fortified chapel, and townhouses were built on Moulineauxplatz.
The place celebrated the year 1990 with a large-scale 1000th anniversary.
Incorporations
For the regional reform in Lower Saxony , which took place on March 1, 1974, Arnum was incorporated into the new municipality of Hemmingen.

coat of arms
The Arnum coat of arms was designed by the heraldist and graphic artist Alfred Brecht , who designed all the coats of arms in the Hanover region. The approval of the coat of arms was granted on September 8, 1961 by the district president in Hanover.
Blazon : " Red : silver divided , above a blue - armored eagle , below in the silver ring a silver oak leaf ." | |
Justification of the coat of arms: The Arnum coat of arms connects the extinct family coat of arms of the noble lords of Arnum with the symbol that best characterizes the Malstatt: the ring, which in the oldest Germanic times marked the area around the Malstatt around the sacred tree. A white horse had to make the circle with its hind legs. In later times the term “ring” was transferred to the painting workshop. Since the noble lords of Arnum wore a red eagle in a silver shield, it was fortunate that the current national colors reappear in the coat of arms. |
religion
- Protestant churches
- The Evangelical Lutheran peace parish belongs to the Hemmingen church region and has two churches. The historic fortified chapel dates from the 15th century. Since this no longer met the requirements of the community, the modern Friedenskirche was built in 1991 .
- Catholic Church Heart of Mary
- As a result of the influx of refugees and displaced persons from around 1946, the number of Catholics also rose sharply in Arnum. Catholic services were first held in the Protestant chapel or in a private apartment, then in a barrack built for this purpose . 1960/61 was on the road Pattensen lane 17 , a Catholic church as solid construction with tower. The plans came from the architect Hodler. Their benediction took place on March 25, 1961 . It was consecrated as St. Mary's Church with the name Immaculate Heart of Mary . Since the mid-1960s, Arnum was the seat of a Catholic parish, to which the districts of Devese , Westerfeld and Wilkenburg also belonged. Later it belonged as a branch church to the Catholic Church of St. Johannes Bosco in Hemmingen-Westerfeld. On November 27, 2008 the building was profaned by Vicar General Werner Schreer , which was demolished in March 2009 in order to build a new municipal day care center. Today the parishioners belong to the parish of St. Augustinus in Hanover ( deanery Hanover of the Diocese of Hildesheim ).
Culture and sights
Buildings
- The historic fortified chapel was built around 1400. In 1571 the chapel was referred to in a document as "Maria Magdalena Church", but the name was later no longer used. During the Thirty Years War, the building was destroyed and rebuilt in 1626; it was restored in 1985 and its core renovated in 2006.
- The Friedenskirche , consecrated in 1991, was able to offer the Evangelical Lutheran parish the space it needed after the fortified chapel had become too small.
