traffic

Uffeln is well developed in terms of traffic. A former section of federal highway 65 , which was replaced by federal highway 30 to the south, runs south of the village .

In the western district of Uffeln the Tecklenburger Nordbahn runs with the Uffeln train station. The freight siding and the associated freight shed were removed a few years ago. There is a siding to the industrial area and the Mittelland Canal. The eastern industrial area is connected to the Löhne – Rheine railway line by a freight track . The Uffeln port is located on the Mittelland Canal . The Ibbenbüren branch canal is located south of the port .

A narrow-gauge railway once connected Uffeln with Dickenberg and Hörstel station. It was used to transport goods. Above all, bricks, sandstone and coal were transported to the port and train station in this way.

economy

The district of Uffeln is the industrial area of the city of Ibbenbüren. The chemical companies Akzo Nobel Ibbenbüren, Angus Chemie and Sachtleben Chemie Ibbenbüren and Sidra are located here. The former BASF subsidiary Wibarco, which was sold to the Swiss Hansa Group , was closed due to the insolvency of Hansa Chemie.

In the western part there are numerous metal construction companies, disposal companies, a large logistics center of the Fiege company and some small and medium-sized chemical companies. On the slope of the Schafberg there are quarries and two former garbage dumps.

Mining was particularly important for Uffeln in the 19th and 20th centuries , which is particularly evident in the former Mieke mine and numerous mining legacies such as the Bodelschwingh tunnel and the Barbara tunnel . A limestone quarry and a lime kiln offered many families a living.

Landfills

In 1968, the Wolters landfill was set up in a former quarry on Rheiner Strasse . After the approved landfill volume of 220.00 m³ had been reached, the landfill was closed in 1977. The deposit was already relatively orderly and the landfill gas was discharged through a chimney, but the surface was not subsequently sealed. It was not until 1999 that the landfill received a surface seal in order to keep rainwater away from the landfill body.

A second landfill was then operated in the vicinity until 2003.

nature

The Heiliges Meer - Heupen nature reserve is located in the border area with the towns of Hopsten and Obersteinbeck . The former limestone quarry has created a valuable retreat for nature.

Community life is particularly determined by the numerous clubs and leisure groups. The largest and most important club is SV Uffeln , which focuses on football, but also offers other sports such as beach volleyball and tennis. SV Uffeln has existed since 1932. Other activities are also initiated by the shooting club (has existed since 1869) and the numerous groups of the former parish of St. Marien Uffeln.
